Oddly off topic but not. Sorry Olaf. Here is a portable rebar cutter, hooks up to a cordless drill. Just thought it was pretty neat for draining. Or not. Whatever. Follow the linkie.

wow b&e!

We have established that many many times in many many threads with many many words of many maniness ;) I think with all the posts on bump keys, lock picks, gear, laws, getting through brick walls, etc can we just assume that everyone is aware of what B & E is and the risks involved with this hobby? I just like finding neat tools. Its a fascination, maybe because Im a guy? I dont know. The James Bond in all of us? Whatever. Can we just have a thread on gadgets and tools with no mention of getting arrested?

Sounds good to me, on that note I apologize for the delay as the weather has been shitty these past few days. I will have photos as soon as they will be worth looking at.

Because this thread is about using those tools to B&E;
A lot of the abandoned places I have come across where I am require a little extra effort to get inside.

Truly abandoned buildings are often hard to come by where I'm from, and they're most often a few empty rooms and lots of dirt. I'm not interested in exploring the garages of insane asylum, I want to get in. If nobody's used it in, say, five years... maybe it's "abandoned" category, maybe it isn't. But at that point who cares?

Agreed. There are a few rooms and places I didn't see because of locks (or welds), but I never had to jimmy, pick, bust, etc a lock for the hundreds I have seen.
I'm lazy
Carrying dedicated B&E tools is asking for it, and posting it here is just plain stupid. nuf said.

Also, who will be the next "mrs right " from the forum that you will be cyber dating?

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

Hahaha, yeah back in the day when I was a little dumber I was talking to someone here, I'm engaged now going to be a married man in September!!!

Nope not the same thing, as you can see this is a tool ring as evidenced by THE PICTURES. In related news it has rained for the past four days and it's as soggy outside as a dog thrown in a swimming pool. Here are some photos of the first prototype UE tool I made a week ago. It started as a survival tool design but I decided to fiddle around with it. What you see here while not tailored to exploration is a good platform for what I want to do as it gives you some idea of the eventual design. Instead of features like the bottle opener you see here and the saw I will have three different sizes of bolt pick attached to the handle on a pivot so they can swing out to be used and folded back in when not. Also included will be the wire breaker notch, tool socket for using hex wrenches and screwdriver attachments, box nose pliers and open socket wrenches. The first five photos are of a wrench tool I made for a client last week, the ones below are of the prototype that started as a survival tool and gave me the idea for how to construct my exploration tool.

The wrench...

Jeeesze. Dukes you can cut to the chase like lightning at times. I'm having a Lord Rick attack right now.

Olaf just remember that conjugal prison visits aren't allowed in federal prisons.

Why would someone want to attract this kind of attention on the internet?

Blackhawk I don't mind you bashing me and whatnot cause it makes me laugh. Aside from that the weather is finally clear today so I'm headed out to take me some photos.

Sure man, the wrench tool has a prying tip with a nail puller, various sized open wrench sockets, a wire breaker notch and a saw. I stamped a guide for the tool with it's parts labeled on the one side and the clients logo on the other.

Ok I got those photos today but it would have been better if I could upload video as the technique might be a little hard to grasp just from pictures. At any rate I will do my best to explain as I go along, please forgive the number of photos as I had to take them in sequence so you can get an idea of the motions I am making.

The first tool I am showing is the bolt slide which like the bolt pick (changed it's name from "door hook" like I was calling it) is very simple to use. Each door is different of course but as long as there is enough clearance for the tool the technique used is the same.

Step one insert the slide into the area of the door lock that the lock bolt goes into. The tip of the slide must be inside this recess or it will not work.

Step two lever the bolt inward into it's frame, unless you are dealing with a security bolt that cannot be retracted except by unlocking the door conventionally this maneuver is simple and takes mere seconds. Here are some photos to illustrate this...

Alright here I am demonstrating using the bolt pick which works essentially like a shove knife but mine is slimmer and can fit inside a wider range of door locks. Also like the bolt slide there are only a few things that can thwart this technique. The first is not having enough room between the door and jam for the tool to fit, the second is if the lock bolt goes too far into the door jam to catch the curve of the bolt however this is not common and rarely posses any problem. Another noteworthy point is even if the taper of the lock bolt cannot be reached if the pick has good clean edges and you have even some room to do the motions this can still work. Also like the bolt slide you can be stopped if trying to open a door lock that is protected from tampering. In the years I have used these tools I come across latch plates more often than security locks. Just today I opened five doors that I have never attempted before while getting these photos.

Step one, is to insert the tool into the area of the lock like you see me doing below placing the pick overtop the bolt.

Step two, position the pick at the point where the bolt goes into the door frame, this is where the bolt tapers to a point. The pick tool will go at the juncture of the taper and the door frame.

Step three, while pulling back on the tool (towards your body) jiggle the pick back and forth much like you would turn a key in a lock. The sharp edges of the tool will bite into the soft brass of the lock bolt and pull it out of the door jamb. Some doors give you a great amount of room to work with and no jiggling is required, just place the pick over the bolt and pull towards yourself. Some doors however have virtually no clearance at all, this is where the construction of the tool makes a difference. If the edges of the bolt pick (will take new photos soon detailing this section) are rounded in any way it will not bite into the bolt and will instead slide uselessly. Here are some photos...

Inserting the pick into the lock area...

This photo shows where the tool contacts the bolt and the magic happens

This is the back and forth jiggling motion I talked about earlier, the exact same motions you use when locking/unlocking a door. When you do this I have found slightly reduced entry times when done quickly, just don't forget to always be pulling back towards yourself as you do this. Some lock bolts have a good amount of spring to them so if you aren't pulling back while jiggling the bolt will just slide back where it was. Even though most lock bolts are relatively soft metal the pick can and will see a lot of wear. For this reason making the pick out of heat treated carbon or spring steel is recommended and like I have said before keep the edges sharp.
