So, who has done it? Tips? Is there really any good way to minimise the chance of someone spotting you on the way up?

I have thought of crane-climbing before, but have never done it. There is a crane company over here -- Marino Crane -- they have these BIG cranes that go up about a few hundred or so feet in the air. This guy, Marino, builds his own cranes and then sells them at a later date [they go for about 5-10 million each]. The latest one he built got shipped off to somewhere in Ohio. It weighed several hundred [or thousand, I forget which] tons. The cab itself had a kitchen and a bedroom, for what I don't know. As for not getting spotted, do it at night, when not to many lights are on.

I have done it a few times. I like radio towers more though. The only thing I can say is climb inside if you possible can, It will reduceyour visibility. Make sure you cover your body completely. Try to go on a night with no moon or better clouds. If there are lights around that light it up even a bit someone will probably see you.

Another good tip about crane climbing is to, of course, check it out first... and see if the light from the surroundings will blind anyone as to your location. Sometimes those lights, which kill us on the ground, are rather helpful when in the air.

Also, something that a friend of mine does here - adds a bit of time to the trip, but it boosts the chances that you're not gonna die - get d-clips and steel cable, and whip the cable around a bar every few feet or so, and clip yourself to it (unclipping yourself from the last oen and pulling the cable in as you do so, of course). That way, if something happens and you should slip, you're only slipping about 6 or 8 feet, tops.

That sounds like a very good way to prevent a nasty fall, but I will still assume if you fall then your heart will get beating fast I'd be careful of wet cranes though. I have never climbed one but if the paint is the same stuff they use on bobcat's..it will get slick.

I'm specifically thinking of the T-shaped semipermanent cranes they put up when they're building a building. The type with an operator room on the top, so they have ladders meant to be climbed twice a day.

I'm not yet confidant enough in my climbing abilities to freeclimb a normal crane. Plus, they're not usually as tall, so less fun.

Isn't that a gantry crane?

[EDIT: No, No it isn't. A gantry crane is an upside down "U" shape. Used for making large boats, like aircraft carriers.]

Just to clear things up...

Gantry crane (often installed indoors on rails running the length of a hanger or warehouse):

Tower crane (variable height using modular pieces):

Stereotypical crane (what's the proper term for this? It telescopes.)

Apparently it's called a mobile telescopic crane. The other common kind in construction sites is the boom crane.

No, but they're quite good with bald eagle gravy.

I know this is a pointless question, but why would you want to climb it.. I mean if you Do, bring a safty harness and make sure you Don't track mud on the ladder on the way up as coming down you might slip thinking it wasn't there on the way up not seeing any..

On not being seen wouldn't just wearing clothing the same color and stuff as the crane itself make you invisble.. I mean unless people are staring right at it while you are doing this they won't notice you out of the corner of your eye if you blend well.. <no flashlights..> only the movement of your actions will give you away..

but then it might be locked.. you might be seen <where the hell are you going to run> you might fall.. <ahhhhhhhhh.. ahhhhhh.. ahh/*thud/> I mean honestly if were cornered on a crane and you were adventurous you could just start it up, lower the hook to some place that would take some time for the pursurers to reach and <!> Climb down the wire.. like 50 feet.. dodging bullets.. really, really high up.. hahaha someone once said to me "let's go hotbox the crane" hahah.. sure.. there an airforce i know of around here.. lets do E's and A's and hi-jack a F19 while we are it..

wheeeeee... yyaayyyy... ZZOOOOOooooommmmm.... I'm sure trails at mach 2 would look really neat actually.. I mean really man.. really.. did i ever tell you your great man.. <sik>

I know this is a pointless question, but why would you want to climb it..

I didnt understand the rest of what you said, spell check will not help you, try english-check...

Why wouldnt you want too? Havent you ever been atop something really high, a rooftop, bridge, etc.? I would think so, becouse it seems like you are high as hell right now.

I love the feeling of being atop a building, just looking around below you, and having a view that you dont get to see every day, it is so calming, and good for my karma...

I've climbed a crane before as shown in this mission:
http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=20155

Its like climbing anything, use the two contact rule and make sure that whatever your climbing is rusted through or will collapse under your weight.
