Hoyt Park Pool, *Milwaukee*

Asterisks fo Milwaukee, as it's not really Milwaukee, but pretty damn close.

Not much to say. I grew up a couple blocks north, a couple of harsh winters deemed the pool unfillable for the first time since 1939 and had to be closed for the summer of 2003, and has been closed since. I thought it'd be fun to hop the fence and get my feet wet in the proverbial pool of urban exploration:

So, here it goes for a first post:

Some pics from September:

I think it would be cool if you got some shots from inside the waterslide, or on top of it high up looking down.

Pretty cool, good way to start. Any easy way into the building next to it?

Nice. Why did they close it?

The personal responsibility train left the station years ago, and you gave it the finger as you watched it leave.

Thank you for posting such great pictures.

I was able to do a google search and came up with the website for Hoyt park.

http://www.friends...about/issues.shtml

They state - Hoyt Park pool facility has been closed for three seasons and there is no definitive plan for re-opening.

However on the main page of the site it looks as if they are trying to bring this once great park back.

*hugs and cheers*

Thanks, all.

They closed it down because two harsh winters (combined with two harsh summers) damaged the floor of the pool so much that it could not be filled i nspring 2003.

There aren't any good entrances to the building, lamentably, it's all pretty well sealed, either with locks or nails. I'm not a fan of breaking in. That and the fact that the surrounding park is still very much in use and popular. I had to watch out for people pulling out into the adjacent parking lot, but I know the pool is sometimes used by local skateboarders.

Looking back though, I probably should've checked out the locker rooms and showers, which were semi outdoors and located behind the opening seen in the left of this photo:

Awesome place. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for abandoned pools. The pics are good too.

i remember swimming in this pool as a kid. yeah its too bad they had to close it. Scott Walker (uber conservative county exec) is trying everything within his power to prevent it from being re-opened, but I think there is enough support in the county that his veto will eventually get over-ridden.

I love the bridge photos, very pretty.

Is anyone else weirded out by empty pools? I don't know what it is...they've always given me an uneasy feeling.

Nice set! I second the suggestion of photos from the top or in the slide next time.

Thanks.

You're certainly not alone in being weirded out by empty pools. This one especially to me as I had swam here years earlier. Probably the most eery feeling I've ever had was stepping down a ladder to set foot in the deep end and have moss under my feet!

Nice job!

Reminds me of the old "Heritage USA" waterpark that was abandoned after the fall of P.T.L <<<Anyone remember all that? (Jim and Tammy Faye Baker?)

I've skateboarded here a bunch of times, and actually thought it was now gone. Oh well. I've been in the attached building. It's kind of cool, but very small, and rather boring. The highlight is all the old photos hanging on the walls in there.

***Bump***

The design for that pool is exactly like McCarty Park in West Allis. Same locker room set up, same exact slide, same number of diving boards, etc... Kinda cool to see what it would look like completely empty.
