G to the Race
Hi!
| | Ravenna Arsenal? < on 1/12/2007 12:26 AM >
| | | I have been driving past the miles-long chain-link fence all my life and watching the buildings behind it deteriorate. I have always wanted to go in--I don't care for military stuff all that much, but this place has always had a cold-war intrigue for me. I see holes in the fence, but I don't know what kind of security the place has. I know in the hyper-secure post-9/11 world it's probably impossible to get in, but I wonder if they offer tours or anything? If you know anything, pass it on.
You betcha |

| | | I just did a little reading on it. As far as security...I'm guessing HIGH. Its apparently VERY active still. This article has some info on that www.globalsecurity...ty/aap-ravenna.htm That info alone is enough to make it seem incredibly active. M1 tank simulators...real M1 training...special forces parachute training...weekly aviation training...storage of upwards of 15% of the Ohio NG's tracked and wheeled vehicle assists...Heh, you get the idea. | | | i've seen all the old buildings while driving down rt 5, and i too have been wanting to check it out. but like alptraum was saying, i've heard that it is very much still active. i've also heard from several different people that its very dangerous to walk around in there because there are land mines buried there. not sure how true it is, but just in case.

| | | Just by looking at the googlemaps satellite imagery of the site, you can tell theres no way the government would leave that incredible amount of property sit unprotected. Theres literally over a thousand structures out there. It's registered with the EPA as a superfund site, so Im sure theres a ton of hazardous materials about, which gives the government another reason to keep a close eye on it.
