I'm not much for night explorations. Never have been, even when I was young and totally invincible. It just limits the whole experience to me. You can't usually take good pictures, you can't really see what your exploring. Even if you don't fall down a hole (which is always possible at night) you just don't get the experience of seeing the place. You might like it for the spy vs. spy "feel" of a night trip, but for the actual trip, it makes it very limiting. Ok, all you guys go ahead and bash my comments. No matter though, that's what I prefer. I do them from time to time, but it's the exception.

The only sense I can see to go at night is if the place is pitch black in daylight anyway; totally sealed.

To either get in or get out, or both undetected.

To use as cover to scale the blast furnace to the top to get night time pics or better, sunrise pics.

In general I agree with you. Since I've already been busted at this place (and recently too) and there's no way to get to it without being out in the open for several minutes, I think this is the only way I can go back. This place will be gone soon, possibly as soon as a week or two from now.

You haven't got busted yet. You got a friendly warning. Next time they may not be so kind. You could try asking for permission.

You could go in predawn, and leave after sunset. If you not careful and if these guards are sharp, they'll prolly tag you.

Using flashlights is a surefire way to be spotted, and those cute red lens don't cut it. Your pic taking, health, or your wallet are likely to suffer for a night time shoot at a place like this.

I've found in most cases approach is the best policy. If you approach anyone and start talking first and assert yourself and really sound convincing and sincere, you can ge away with quite a bit. understand what is suspicious. put yourself in the other person's shoes. Think fast, but be rational. Running is rarely a good idea, I'd even venture to say it's never a good idea.

Hey yeah you, fat ass. Not interested.

There's no way they would grant permission. The site has too many open holes, chunks of jagged metal etc... If the same guy catches me again, he's not likely to have a sense of humor about it, hence my not wanting to be spotted next time around.

Going in pre dawn and staying all day isn't an option, the things I want to see aren't connected in any way, I'll have to be out in the open a bit. Going in predawn, exploring a bit in the dark, waiting for light to explore a little and leaving quickly without the cover of night might be an option.

i've found that in dealing with police or security in any situation, whether or not it it is UE related the best thing to do is when you see them, and you know they see you, just saunter up like you don't have a care in the world and say "what seems to be the problem sir" (the sir is important) and then just stay as casual and respectful as possible, and they usually let you off. you must remember that the only real reason a cop is going to write you up for something minor is if you piss him off, otherwise, why deal with the paperwork?
or you know you could do the whole Fear and Loathing thing:
"Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop. Your normal speeder will panic and immediately pull over to the side when he sees the big red light behind him . . . and then we will start apologizing, begging for mercy...This is wrong. It arouses contempt in the cop-heart. The thing to do — when you’re running along about a hundred or so and you suddenly find a red-flashing CHP-tracker on your trail — what you want to do then is accelerate. Never pull over with the first siren-howl. Mash it down and make the bastard chase you at speeds up to 120 all the way to the next exit. He will follow. But he won’t know what to make of your blinker-signal that says you’re about to turn right...
This is to let him know you’re looking for a proper place to pull off and talk . .. keep signaling and hope for an off-ramp, one of those uphill side-loops with a sign saying “Max Speed 25” . . . and the trick, at this point, is to suddenly leave the freeway and take him into the chute at no less than a hundred miles an hour... He will not be reasonable at first . . . but no matter. Let him calm down. He will want the first word. Let him have it. His brain will be in a turmoil: he may begin jabbering, or even pull his gun. Let him unwind; keep smiling. The idea is to show him that you were always in total control of yourself and your vehicle — while he lost control of everything."

If there's security there at night (looting and vandal time), you will likely be tagged if they're any good. They will simple sit with lights off, or even in a structure on a lawn chair, with a large over view of the complex maybe with binoculars, if your really unlucky, night vision (unlikely). Wondering around an unfamiliar, guarded steel mill at night is a sure fire recipe for trouble (disaster).

Yeah, no way out, YOU HAVE TO DO THIS.

You might have a point. I'm not sure they're any good and it is a HUGE place. I think I have a pretty good chance of pulling it of no matter when I go. I did it before, and so have others. I guess I'm just being paranoid.

kemmer, I think that you might want to chill on this site for a month or two, if not more. If you get busted by the same security guard, he's almost definitely not going to be as nice as he was this time around.

Well, like I said before, this site won't be there in a month or two.

Sad but you would be better off to let it go and leave it be. No site (regardless of how cool it is) is worth a criminal record.

You were very lucky. Treat that luck like a door marked "Pull". Don't push it.

use your best of best judgement. if you run make damn well sure you can 110% get away because if a cop or guard chases you and catches you 1.)they are going to be pissed and if its a cop they are going to slam your face straight into the ground. 2.) you are going to get hit with the god damn book.

it sucks.

they should thank you for running and giving them excersize though. you are helping them out with cardio and that helps the heart. think about it. if you didnt run they are just going to go back to sitting around eating donuts and cheese doodles waiting to clog up the arteries and have a heart attack or just add to the problem with obesity in america. ungreatful authority.

Not a single fuck given...

I missed that part, but like rainman8889 said, it might just be better to let it go. You could always go on the main day of demolition and take photos of that.

one time i went up to a state hospital, parked in a park and ride right next to it. when we came out, i had left my lights on, while waiting for aaa security came and asked what were doing in there, they were really cool, we all had cameras, which looked good.the said the police had to come to warn us and write down my plate #, the cop came and he was awesome he was looking at our pics, and the security guard even agreed to give us a tour, on an other day.
not only did we get lucky for not being arrested, but its like we got rewarded.

I strongly agree with 508Explore and those who'd vote for "play cool."

Take this for what it's worth, of course every case is different. But in my previous job I've had to work with cops a lot and the concept of "adult" behavior is what often makes the difference between a ticket (or worse) and a more or less friendly warning.

1 - When you enter a place where you know you're not supposed to be, you are making a conscious decision (as an adult) to break a rule.
2 - At this point, do everything you do to avoid detection.
3 - If someone spots you, the "game" is over.
4 - If the someone spotting you is the police, running will doubly piss them off: a) it's not the "adult" thing to do and b) you risk looking like someone who's really got something to hide.
5 - If that someone spotting you is a security guard, and he somehow manages to catch you, your flight will be reported to the police, which brings you back to point 4.

Instead, maintaining that "adult" behavior shows you are non-threatening and are doing what you're doing with good intentions (preserving the memory of a place soon to be destroyed, etc.).

While this is not UEing per se, I got caught trespassing three times: walking on an abandoned ship right off Chincoteague's main canal (Virginia), breaking into a National Trust site in Wales and entering a fenced-off railroad compound in Alexandria (Virginia); and each time I just knew my "super ego" would not let me run, and I'm glad I didn't.
