Anyone out there have experience in these cities? I grew up in Warren, but never explored anything; while at YSU I went into one abandoned house that was taken down that very evening. Kind of like a sign from someone. Anyway, if you are in the area, say so, I'd like to hook up w/someone.

You betcha

I actually saw a few abandoned mills from Youngstown on A&E today. They were doing one of those "true crime" shows about the mob in Youngstown and were giving some background of the area, and cut to some very derelict mills and some history about the steel mills closing in the 70's and 80's.

I haven't lived in the area for like 15 years, so I don't know how much has been razed. I know in Warren, the huge Copperweld place is still standing w/small independent shops working in it, also, there's a Westinghouse plant on the east side of Warren that look primo, but dogs may be involved. I'm sure there is much, much more I don't know about but would love to discover.

How much of the mills were left, and did they mention republic steel?

The Republic plant in Warren is still going--it's now called Warren Consolidated Industries. It's owned by this guy name Ira Something, he also owns the company that either makes or develops Hummer vehicles. Kind of interesting on him: He was building the largest residential house in America in the Hamptons, may have run out of dough to finish, but kind of funny that he goes to Warren and has the kind of jack he has. Anyway, I'm going to call my mom to set up a w/e trip, do some yardwork for her and scout some sites out.

my cousin works at WCI (which is an old republic mill) and from what he tells me pretty much all of it is in operation.. and a guy saw him takin a picture of the blast furnace gettin tapped and they tried to run him off the job.. so not camera friendly... i think they use half of Copperweld now.. my buddy was workin for a trash company that sorted recylables out there and he says if you pulled up to the main gates in a pickup they'd wave you thru, but im sure theres enough ways in around back... my gramps retired from there so ill ask him.. as far as republic steel, i have some shots from the pipe? mill in Campbell... the place that looks like it just exploded is WCI runnin at full tilt on a bitter Christmas eve a couple years ago

It would be awesome if this turned into another thread where several lesser known local gems got blown up all over the internet much to the chagrin of the local explorers/preservationists!

Actually, the explosion at WCI was contained to one furnace at the mill. It will probably be down for about a month. Hot steel + Water is a very bad thing. I work for a consulting engineering firm and two of our guys were standing at that very spot about 3 hrs before the boom.

Most of the furnaces that A & E showed were torn down several years ago.

IF YOU GO TO COPPERWELD BE VERY CAUTIOUS ABOUT HIGH VOLTAGE. Several people have been electrocuted in that place when they were trying to strip out wire.
The local media have also reported that security has been stepped up.

Speaking from experience, if you go to one of these largely shut down industrial sites wearing a white hard hat and carrying a clip board taking notes, most people won't question you. They think you're an engineering consultant doing a site survey.

We are all one big happy family....

Couchmole, thanks for the tips... i remember when they caught those theives... these cracksmokin coppertheives are makin what i do alot harder.. MotherF ask your buddy on the YFD about all the abandoned houses these dopefiends have been torching just to make it easier to strip all the plumbing.. nobody seems to miss a house worth 5,000, but a couple firefighters have gotten hurt and that BS is still going on.... G Race its a small world, God bless the Youngstown district steelworker! wish i woulda taken some shots of the Grace furnace at brier hill before they tore it down (I could see the stacks from my front porch) and devilc im new to websites and forums but the reason im here is cause i thought it was a place where like minded people would share ideas and locations.. is that an incorrect observation? anyway... thanks for makin me feel welcome pal
