trying to think of the name of this town in WV

When i was about 13, my dad took me to an abandoned town in WV. It wasn't more than a half-hour from the new river gorge area. Sorry about my vague-ness, but Im trying to recall memories from when i was 13 years old. I remember this was a mining town. It was completely abandonded. But looked like everyone just picked up and left. The stores still had all the glass intact. everything was just as it had been probably 80 years ago. there were like 4 sets of railroad tracks running through this town. I think it had 3 or so banks as well. It was know for the miners and gambling... hence the reason for 3 or so banks.

I know this is very vague, but can anyone help me in trying to remember the name of this place.

Sounds like 25% of WV.
Be very careful in rural WV.
The scourge of meth has made some of the rural hamlets less hospitable than one may like.
WV is a treasure trove of little-known UE/rural exploration.
Get yourself an atlas and go explore it.

meth huh? ehh.... not my cup of tea. as a firefighter in northeast ohio, ive seen my share of meth labs. they are NOT to be messed with. you would be amaised to what lengths these guys go to booby trap there labs. they love to make crude pipe bombs and such. the chemicals alone will melt your face off.

Sounds like you're thinking of Thurmond, WV. Train tracks were the main street, and automobile access didn't exist until the 1940s, I think?

Thurmond

Take a look at the pictures and see if it's the place you're thinking of. It's not completely abandoned -- it's now a national park. There are also 7 -- yes, 7 -- people living there.

Thurmond was once an extremely wealthy area, and a hotel that once stood on the other side of the New River still holds the record for the longest running game of poker (over 10 years!).

I am 100% positive the town you are talking about is Silent Hill, WV.

You're welcome.

Yes, one family lives there, actually. So if they take a trip together, the town is abandoned. (Except for the park service, of course.)

Interestingly enough, Amtrak still stops there. Only when a flag is raised to tell the train to stop and during the fall foliage train rides, but they do stop.

Another tidbit about Thurmond is that it was used in the movie Matewan as the filming site, since Matewan, WV didn't look much like an old mining town anymore.

We live a couple of hours away, but you're welcome to come visit any time you want. I think we can find a place or two you might enjoy. I can think of three or four off the top of my head.

I'll actually be down in Knoxville the first weekend in February, to visit a friend of mine at UT. If you'll be in town, maybe we can meet up at some point.
