| | | "powder tunnels" is an applicable term, as DuPont is one of the largest manufacturers of explosives in the world. This could have easily been a poor shot of a rail system used to transport any number of granulated explosives (sometimes called "prills") to and from separated storage bunkers. A typical explosive (or even fireworks) storage system consists of several isolated earthen bunkers. it is not unthinkable to hypothesize that these would be connected by an underground tunnel system. I know that most of the DuPont prill towers are in disuse today, but at one point in time, that was a major portion of the industrial explosive market Btw: this information was gleaned from the 1964 DuPont Blasting HandbookMost university libraries have a copy. You seem to be correct: "In 1906, the E.I. duPont de Nemours Company purchased five square miles of land – home to the DuPont Powder Works. The explosives plant, and housing for workers eventually became the Village of DuPont. Today, DuPont is the fastest growing city in western Washington with more than 5,400 residents." and "Adjacent to the historic village, DuPont operated a manufacturing plant for nearly 70 years, producing explosives that were used to blast stumps, clear roadways and fight two World Wars. In 1976, the plant was closed and DuPont sold its 3,200 acres to the Weyerhaeuser Company. " There are some clues as to where the tunnels might be (if they still exist) on this site: http://www.ecy.wa....r/weyerhaeuser.htm Take a look at the 'Maps' file.. If you correlate the railroad test sample sites with actual directional coordinates, you might just get something! [last edit 1/19/2007 6:20 PM by wastepdx - edited 2 times]

After more research, I have doubts that these tunnels still exist.. The land in question has been cleared for development.
|
Yeah, I would hope they've been demolished. even if they weren't, I would certainly not go in there. Old, disused tunnels with wood shoring And the possibility of old, unstable explosives lying around? I'll pass.

Oh, i'm not saying there would definitely be some there, but the possibility exists that there could be some spilled explosives. Not any large quantity per se, but weirder stuff has been found.

| | | I've found explosives lying around in mines before. I remember once I was poking around an old building in the woods near my home, and found some boxes of dynamite just rotting into the ground. Fortunately the climate there is wet enough that the nitro just leeches out into the ground rather than crystalizing.
