Im pretty new to this site been here a couple times and have been looking for some info on and abandon "city" that was built as a decoy during WW2. Its purpose was to trick the nazis/japanese from bombing richmond v.a. I was just wondering if any one would happened to have pics of the place? or a location I can google earth it. Any help would be great thx!

This is the first I've heard of it.

It would most likely be gone by now, but who knows.

This should be in the mid-atlantic section.

They built a decoy AIRFIELD in the vicinity.
It is now a park.

there were several of these decoy towns built along the west cost in the mid forties. i don't know specifics but will try to find info and post it. i never heard of any on the east coast but they may exist there as well.

as far as i know, the houses were nothing special, made of very flimsy materials, and would not have survived sixty years. nonetheless, the sites may still remain.

Are you now, or have you ever been?

If you have google earth (if you don't, you should) look at the richmond airport and then look east. If you turn on the google earth community layer, there is a maker posted for a water tank. Click on it and go to the thread. There's an explanation there about it and a link to a website. It's pretty interesting, even though the actual airstrip is gone now and there is a semiconductor plant sitting where it used to be. I tried to go there about a year ago and security was tight due to all the technology developments that have been built in the area.

Here's a link to the thread in the google earth forum:

It's there, nothing but only streets those because an actual city was never built, just lamp posts and streets. The military used it for training in the 1970s and part of it was sold by Governor Allen in the 1990s. the Infinion plant and lab is on part of the site but the rest is still there. Here is the wikipedia link. It is not hard to find and is very interesting, but nothing exciting. Happy huntings.

It's pretty amusing that they went to all this trouble to protect themselves from a very unlikely scenario. This was far beyond the Germans heavy bomber range.

What's even more hilarious is the fact that none of the eastern coast was blacked out at night. This gave U-boat commanders clear shots at ships during the night. "Happy days" for the U-boats; many a kill was made. More than one U-boat captain commented on this strange US oversight. Really dumb. For well over a year the U-boats ruled the night off our eastern coast.

Yeah I had heard about the decoy airfield, but I personally have never been out there. I knew a guy who went out there, and proceeded to find the most of the "interesting" decoy stuff was gone. The security was also suppose to be unusually high for a lab. I know there's a lot out there on a google search so look around. Good luck if you go. -Drew

Always listen to experts. They'll tell you what can't be done, and why. Then do it.

Pessimist by policy, optimist by temperament -- it is possible to be both. How? By never taking an unnecessary chance and by minimizing risks you can't avoid. This permits you to play out the game happily, untroubled by the certainty of the outcome. - Lazarus Long "Time Enough For Love"

Did you say lab? Like R&D with animals? If it's that, or a DOD site, stay clear. If your caught, it will be extra nasty.

While on my ship in the Navy, I read a book onboard called: Uboat Ace. It was all about Wolfgang Lueth, and the whole U-boat operations under his command. I believe he had some of the most sinks of most other U-boat captains. Pretty interesting.

Not sure about that, but I have a lot of respect for those sailors. Most were young, but they were some of the very best men Germany had, and were highly trained. In that service branch something like a 25% of those who served would not survive to see the end of WW2; the highest mortality rate in any of the German fighting men. Life was nasty on the boats too.

I want to pick up Das Boot again. What a great watch; it's such a great war epic, one of my favorite WW2 films. You can almost smell the sweat and diesel...

Correction: there were about 40,000 who served on German U-boats during WW2; 30,000 of those sailors never returned home.

That pic of the captain in wild. Erich Topp, one of my favorite U-boat commanders, pasted away on December 26, 2005 in Hanover at the age of 91. Bummer. He helped preserve the history and tell the story of what it was to be a successful Wolfpack leader, and live.
