I think Avatar is just trying to establish a common ground where anyone can participate. I mean aren't you guys being kinda exclusive speaking french in the chatroom?

The current law (The Official Languages Act of Canada, which BTW is being reviewed as we speak) has no effect whatsoever on private businesses, private properties, contracts between two private parties or any working environment in Canada. The only provision that the law states is that all Canadians citizens have the right to receive services in the official language of their choice when dealing with federal institutions.
In the last decades, appeal courts and the Supreme Court of Canada ( see R. V. Charlebois) has stated that in fact and for efficiency reasons, the Government must provide services in the two official languages only where and when over 20% of the population of the region is part of the language that is in minority in this region.
Federal institutions are quite limited in regions and across Canada, other than for Immigration, Passeports and Taxes and finances, most Canadians don't deal with any federal offices. Health, Education, car licensing, policing (in most Canadian areas, especially in urban areas) are all of provincial jurisdictions and are not concerned by the Canadian Official Languages Act.
So obviously, UER is absolutely not covered by this federal law. That's all BS. I hate it when people don't know what they are talking about.

Dont talk about UER.CA as being an assimilation machine because if you think that then get the hell out of here.
If you haven't noticed that bill 101 is basically an attempt to ethnically cleanse the english language.
Also you can have a sign in chinatown montreal and the chinese writing can be as big as the french writing, but if there is english writing on that same sign then it must be smaller then the french writing. The government spent how many MILLION dollars to hire people to go with ladders and tape measures to make sure that even though the french on the sign was written before the english, that the english text was at least the minimal percentage smaller then the french text...
That's fucked up, when the only way you can bring your self up is by penalising the opposition.
moral, dont talk shit about people being "racist against the french" because Quebec libre... or Francophones Quebecois libre?

How many MILLIONS by the government to hire people with measuring tapes? Check your sources, it's less than half a million for the OLF and there are now only 3 employees that are doing this in the entire province of Quebec and they only do follow up on complaints that are filed - they don't go out on themselves with their measuring tapes.
Once again, so many urban myths, so many misconceptions, so many false informations.
COULD SOMEONE LOCK THAT THREAD PLEASE???

This is so true, especially the first paragraph. I used to work with a woman who was in her 30s with two kids and she spoke absolutely no English. she used to be snobby and ignorant and right out rude to me for being english (even though I speak french...writing is another story...sorry). I guess it hit her one day, toiling away for a bunch of cheap heartless bastards for less than 11 bucks an hour after 7 years of service (and the oppressive owners were francophone BTW). She really started to openly regret not being able to speak english and she thought it was too late for her but not her children. The realization got worse when she hired a tutor for her son for an hour a week to teach him english and it didn't help him much cause you need more than an hour a day even to learn a language. I don't want to over estimate the importance of english but I'm sorry, in the business world its so important. About 70% of the calls I take each day are english, its the language of the business world. It sucks that she's never gonna be able to break that cycle and it ain't the oppressive anglos holding her down now is it?
the only way Bill 101 hurts anglos is in the way that there is that the powers that be have a record of what school you went to. Now if Quebec ever were to separate by using verbal gymnastics in their question and rigging the vote and even at that it came to 50% plus 1, the people in power might want to intimidate anyone who won't agree with them. Don't you think knowing who went to what school would come in handy at that point?

funny, in my hometown there was this guy who ran a plumbing business (a very small one)in an almost completely english rural area. He got harassed for literally years for having a sign that read Bob's Plumbing Supplies. He eventually gave in covering the 's Plumbing Supplies with a Canadian flag.
Even if they had no one on this job it still sucks in theory. What if they passed a law that said it was illegal to be a Jew but no one enforced it? would it be ok then? Not that I'm saying it is of the same magnitude but its not whether it is enforced or not that is at issue.
