Ontario Power Company: From Gatehouse to Discharge
A special presentation from the Vanishing Point
For the last four years, I've been exploring Niagara's disused hydroelectric infrastructure with a handful of others. Among the most sprawling, fascinating and often mysterious parts of this century-old infrastructure is the Ontario Power Company facility whose powerhouse is located in the gorge just downstream of the Horseshoe Falls.
At various times, we've had brief opportunities to access nearly every part of this system, and with most of it now sealed or gutted, I've put together a very nearly complete picture of the facility, from its beginnings nearly two kilometers upriver to its gracefully designed generators to the rocks over which its tailwater once flowed. There are elements and details missing of course, and I often kick myself for not having spent more time photographing elements of the powerhouse and valve chambers despite their darkness, but this is probably the most complete vision of the plant that can ever be presented. I still wish you guys would make a poster of the image where one of you guys is standing holding a light just in front of the penstock in the #1 distributor.

Works ok in IE6 though (but who uses IE6 these days? ;) )

Well, if your screen resolution is less than 900ish pixels tall, you're not going to be able to see the whole picture, no. But that's not a function of the javascript, since the window is the right size (at least in my installations of firefox and ff2, I can't speak for IE7 at the moment) it's just passing below the bottom of your screen.
It's a decision I made without really thinking about it to display these photos at 900x600 regardless of their orientation. And it's a frustrating trade-off between displaying a photo at a sufficient size to convey the details and depth of the space and displaying the photo at a size that will be viewable on default users' monitors. It's the same thing with the compound diagram. I could have scaled it down to a size that would have fit in a maximized browser window at 1024, but at the loss of readability and detail. In the end, I left it as is but made sure the main text all fit within that space.
My suggestion: increase your screen resolution to 1280x1024 or higher.
