I'm curious what anyone can tell me about roof tops, I have found a nice lil fire escape that goes up 3 stories to the roof of a local stripclub/cold beer and wine store/hotel and all the rooftops for that entire side of the downtown district are connected (although at different hights) and I thought it might be kinda interesting to take a look...with a lil luck should be able to go the entire lenght of the downtown district.... any suggestions or ideas about how to go about this???

How big of a difference in height are we talking about here?

Climb the fire escape, walk around, have some fun.

You need to walk softly, becouse there could be people directly below you. Be carfull on slants and watch for pits or other drops. Look out for windows or other things that are on the same level or higher then you, watch for people arond these who could spot you.

Take some pics and have some fun...

I had this girlfriend once that just loved to go roofing in Downtown Kansas City, we had a blast. It's more fun on a cool summer night because of air conditioning units that help cover noise, and just for safety and comfort reasons. Be careful on ladders and fireescapes if there's any ice. Also what Macsbug said about being quite is important, as a lot of business' have apartments on their upper levels, with the business owner living there sometimes, could make for a quick call to the cops. Be careful and alert, but I say just head over there and take a look around, take a few short trips before attempting the whole thing, to get a feel of the area. Let us know, I haven't done any full scale roofing in awhile, I might head over to Minneapolis' Warehouse district and give it a try.

Uhhh anywhere from 2-10 feet depending on the rooftop but I havent been up there yet so there may be more ladders, I would think there would be....

Half the area is residential above shops and thats why I am kinda parinoid, that and the fire escape going up goes past 2 windows in the hotel but both windows are always shut, this time of year especially....I am thinking a nice 2a.m. walk in the moonlight

Roofs can be amazingly cluttered, so move with extreme caution. Watch out for: ladders, brooms, buckets of tar, rolls of roofing paper, tools, ventilators, power/telephone lines, and skylights. Be especially careful with things that can be knocked over like ladders... there's nothing like a nice big thud to alert someone below.

Looks like everyone has covered a lot of topics, so I’ll throw something in to think about. Normally Roofs have one way on and one way off safely. Keep you eyes open for way’s off the room if someone spots you.

Have fun and don’t fall.

i have a grappling hook thanks to jesters genious design that i think i might have to take with me, that means i would be able to get off at about 5 different points without too much trouble... but i think i have to find a slightly different way on... I did a lil more looking at that ladder of opertunity and it seems there is about 4-5 feet of slanted roof before it flattens...i think i can get up there but i will have to look into it more...damn i wish i had a digital camera...that would be a sweet set of photos.

and thanks for the advice everyone

I've considered trying out some roofing in TO as well, but you can't really do it downtown with all the high buildings looking practically right down at you. But some main streets closer to the residential areas look like they coul work quite well.

Also, stay down so you can't be seen from the ground. Crawl to the edges if necessary. Its a great way to practice your low stances if you do some kind of kung fu like a shaolin style.

Sometimes I have the most fun that way because there are so many new ways of walking, crawling, climbing and so on that I am forced to experiment with on rooftops.

It is importent not to be seen from the ground, but usally not too much of an issue unless you are near the edge of a building - otherwise the building will block you from being seen below.

Yeah its cool because you have like an imaginary ceiling that lowers as you get closer to the edge, so walking around casually can be lots of fun because you keep transitioning between all kinds of different postures.

I'd be careful if they are flat roofs after rain so you don't step in standign water. It isn't a big concern, just might make the trip less enjoyable.
We don't have connected down town roofs where I live which is unfortunate, but where I used to live there are roof tops on each side of the square (in the center is the courthouse). The only roofs I could get on here where I live would be fast food restraunts. lol

If you go roofing, get some interesting pictures if possible. I Plan on doing some more roofing once I've gotten a digital camera. I don't feel like scanning prints from a disposable.

PS : flash pictures - probably a bad idea on an open roof

Yeah, plus most pics you will be taking on roofs will be of stuff below/far away, and flash will not do anything. Not that there arent intresting things on roofs to look at/take pictures of too.
