|  | | | I'm going to pick up a navigation system for my car, and am currently considering the Mio C310X. Has anyone used this unit, or do you have any other suggestions for a better model?
No more driving around in circles because I can't remember exactly where a location is.

I highly recommend Garmin to Magellan and other makers.

Before I took it to North Carolina with me in September, I updated the maps and whatnot on there. It got me there in one piece, but it had trouble telling me where to go if I got off the main road / main highway in Forest City / Rutherfordton ("Rufferton"). I'm not sure if it was because I was in a semi-rural area, or because I lost signal, or what. In any case I didn't like it.
Don't get my wrong, though - this model of the TomTom has some neat features - like being able to make phone calls with the unit, issue voice commands with the microphone that's included, put MP3s on the included harddrive - but these are all features I'd likely never use.
The voice quality, though, is /very/ nice. There are voices avalible that are, for all intents and purposes, real (basic words are read by actors and recorded) - and there are computer-generated voices. The actor's voices cannot read out street names, but the computer-generated ones can. Both sound equally great.
If you do a LOT of travelling (my entire family does, so buying this unit made sense) - I'd recommend either this model (the 910) or a lesser model (the 710 or 510). The 910 will run you about $700, and the 510 will run you about $600. The main difference is internal harddrive capacity.

I do have my laptop along quite often, but I like having the GPS right on my dashboard next to my steering wheel. I can quickly glance at where I'm going instead of squinting at a large map at 1920x1200 resolution. I did end up turning off the voice though. That got old really fast.

The only thing you need to invest in is a car charger.
If your really into a unit Garmin and Magellen are the best brands in my opinion.

For a couple hundred more you can get the model that actually tells you the street names instead of just showing them on the screen; mine simply says (take a right in 1 mile, etc). They are also good at updating their maps which you can download. My friend has GPS on her nextel phone and it worked pretty well also. Just make sure its securely mounted with either the windsheild mount or a beanbag mount. Mine went flying when I took a corner and then tried to direct me to go back home. Maybe it thought I had too much to drink.

| | | | My buddy has an Alpine Blackbird, works damn nice.. he had a magellan at one point but it kept wiggin out, same as the magellan my mom got.. people say to get garmin or magellan most of the times because they are big companies and you can easily get maps for them.. BUT alot of the GPS systems share the maps.. so you can use maps ment for the garmins in alot of the others.. just look into it before you start buying shit..
