Hello, the purpose of this thread is to provide easy access to information regarding photography.

LENSES:

Allow me to begin by saying "good glass", or good a lens, is not cheap. One who pays less than $300 on a telephoto lens is not terribly concerned with image quality. This is not to say they do not care, as they may be financially incapable of purchasing a higher quality lens. It is ADVISABLE that one saves their funds correctly to purchase good glass.

Indoor photography is an art, just as wedding photography, and landscape photography are. Without the correct tools and skills the artform becomes difficult if not impossible. There are specific lenses which assist in indoor photography, some of the most notable are macro, having a near 1:1 magnification, in the range of 10-35mm.
An example of the aforementioned lens is the Cannon EFS 10-22mm 3.5/4.5 USM, as pictured below.

Be aware of the numbers noted as 3.5/4.5. These are the lowest aperture settings possible. Some effects of UrbEx photography are greatly aided by aperture. For example a photo of a lamp at high aperture (f18 for example) will usually result in most of the image being clear and sharp. The same image at an aperture of f3.5 will result in a focus on the subject and the background/foreground being blurred. It is also important to note the effect of reciprocity, or shutter speed-aperture relation. What is meant by reciprocity is the effect of having different apertures and shutter speeds providing the same image due to a common origin. An example of this is aperture at x and shutter speed at y; when x is decreased by 1 unit y can be increased by 1 unit; thus, the same amount of light is allowed to enter the lens. Again x-1:y+1 == x:y and x+1:y-1 == x:y.

It is also important to note terminology. Standard f"stop" measurements do exist; however, some say f5.6 is one step larger than f8; other say f5.6 is "lower". What is meant is totally different, as the "larger" statement refers to actual aperture size. The "lower" statement refers to the numerical values distance from the origin, or zero.

My 2 personal favorite lenses at the moment are the Canon efs 10-22mm 3.5/4.5 USM and the Canon ef 24-70mm f2.8 USM. These are not the ones I recommend for high speed photography such as sports.

FILTERS

An essential part of most photographers gear is a lens filter set. The function of lens filters is to provide effects which are not easily replicated using the camera itself or software. Two very common filters are neutral grain and polarized. Polarized filters generally help with clarity, sharpness, and light distortion. Neutral grain filters generally assist in landscape and sky photography. There is something quirky about camera manufacturers data read algorithms which leads to underexposed skies or land. With film this is a problem as well; in both situations the neutral grain filter seems to be a cure all.

CAMERA BODIES

DSLR Camera bodies vary little. Primary functions are the same; for the most part. I will swear by my Nikon D70 or Cannon 20D, largely because these are field tested. I recommend buying something that is decently priced (such as the 20D) and has been used by professionals for a good amount of time. Frankly the new 10-14mp $800 cameras that are showing up concern me. You may risk the funds for the "extra" mp; yet, I advise against it. What camera you use is completely up to you; film or digital. Just make sure it fits in your hand.

TRIPODS

Always, always, always use one when you can. Also make sure the tripod can support your camera.

Camera Holding Techniques
Death grip... will finish tomorrow

This is about all for now on my part, until later.
