Has anyone been into what I believe is refered to as the old Eddy Match Plant Paper mill located on the island North of victory island in Ottawa ? It's now owned by Domtar.

there's a thread about that right here http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=37825

it's kind of the holy grail of exploration around ottawa - but if you are from ottawa and you're into industrial buildings i'd suggest heading down to montreal for a weekend. there's no shortage of things to see there.

...and if you ever get into eb eddy, take lots of pictures! good luck.

I was down there with Hedd last week. We milled around a bit while he took some pictures. About 30 minutes later a security truck showed up, clocked EB Eddy in his rounds, and asked us to leave. He was nice but firm about it -- letting us take our time to pack up and move on.

According to the security guy (who works for Domtar, but their truck is leased from some agency), their policy is to challenge anyone on the property. (This means anyone immediately off the sidewalk.) We were in the front yard, but not up close to the building or fence when he came around. A security gatehouse for the active plant across the street has pretty good sight lines onto the Eddy property. We suspect that we weren't detected until Mr Security was doing his scheduled rounds.

He was pretty helpful. Apparently one can request a tour by calling Domtar's Public Relations department. He also told us that two people have died in the structure; I can't say wholly buy that statement though.

It's certainly a helluva place to try and get into. Fairly well lit, only one good access point from the road (remember, it's on an island), and the guardhouse across the street. I think it's possible to get over the fencing undetected, but one would certainly have to be on their game. And then how do you get back out?

Certainly the Holy Grail of Ottawa, IMHO.

Havent been in it, checked it out and climbed into some crevices to get graffiti shots. The network of pipes is friggen amazing itself, and how they just randomly blow hot air(or god knows what...) into the air.

Some social engineering is in order. Anyone know why the security is there in the first place? The equipment cant be worth that much protecting, unless the building is being used for some other purpose.

When I was inside last (about 18 months ago) Domtar was using part of the building for storage. Looked like electrical equipment (transformers, etc). The storage area was blocked off from the abandoned part of the building by a chain link fence.

I'm kinda new to this area, just moved in this fall, but I'm actually doing a research project on this building so here's what I found out about security. Because its been designated a historic building of somesorts, they can't tear it down, when they (being domtar) bought it in 1998 they spent a far amount of money closing it up and now they want to protect their investment.

As for the inside

Plus the roof gives you an amazing photo op too.

We didn't see anything that looked like modern storage in there. Mostly just old paper mill parts strewn about.

Does anyone have any experience or tips on winter rappelling ? I won't have my gear until after I go home for xmas so im expecting it to be actually wintery by then. We hope to go off the towerish part of the mill.

What gear DO you have?

The main thing about rappelling in the wintertime is to DOUBLE UP your ATC....

But knowing what gear you have might help

Hmmm well I'll have to work on the full member thing. As for equipment, I've been mainly using a figure eight, though I do have an atomatic arresting decender (I dont like it normally, goes to slow).

I can only assume that the security is there because everything across the road from the building in question (where the guard shack is located) is active.

If your coming from the war museum and go directly over the gate you stay out of site of the security hut. All you have to watch for is the roaming security trucks. I've been caught once, and all the security gaurd did was tell me to walk off the property and make sure he was gone before I tried to get in again. lol

I like the figure 8's more so because you can have more control over them...

but when I've done decending I've always been really controlled...

I usually do the regular 3 anchors up top and then double up the rope in an ATC

I'll have to ask my boss and see what he says though...he's used figure 8's more than me

More teasers of the mill. I suppose I could make these into a panorama, but why ?
