| | | about gasmasks < on 11/18/2006 7:37 PM >
| | | i am thinking about checking out some mines on the other side of town, and i need a gas mask before i do anything else. what type of gas mask should i use? what filters would i need to get? i would like to get something that protects against carbon monoxide and high buildup of carbon dioxide or just plain dust. but id also like to be protected against asbestos for future explorations. anybody know anything about these? i dont know anything about them. thank you

| | | get a p100 respirator, but im pretty sure that wont protect you against carbon monoxide. It will help with any particles including asbestos and oil fumes and such. as far as i know, you can only avoid Carbon monoxide with a SCBA or at the very least a detector or some sorts to tell you to get the hell out of wherever you are. and also, find someone experienced to do mines and double check stuff with them for whatcha need. good luck exploring though

| | | Gases are hard to protect against with most masks. The biggest issue with mines are not the gasses in them, but the quantity. Its generally impossible to know how much gases are in the air without some kind of kit. However for the Carbon Monxoide issue get one of these. They range between 2-8 dollars depending on who you get it from. You should find these at just about any private airport (not the commercial side for passengers). http://www.skygeek...0YgCFSIuNAodkXp1ZQ

| | | for carbon monoxide, just get a carbon monoxide detector for home use, its exactly like a smoke detector found in every home. only for carbon monoxide.

| | | Your concern is not radon, and unless there's a fire there should be no CO. What does concern you is lack of oxygen; high levels of methane can "push" O2 out making it impossible to sustain life. You can blackout before you realize what hit you. As Jonered has pointed out, a canary is a reliable O2 and poisonous gas indicator. The bird will croak before you do giving you a margin of safety. A mask without bottled air will be useless in a low O2 atmosphere. Do not go in if you know this to be the case!

| | | You can't get a mask to filter CO. You'll need an SCBA unit.

Nuff said. Note: A mask without bottled air = SCBA

| | | Mineworkers usually take a rebreather with them in dangerous situations. There are special CO filters but they are expensive and can only be used 1 time for safety reasons. And filters only protect you up till a certain concentrations, if it's too high it won't help anymore.

Good luck finding a 120V power source in an abandoned mine shaft. I suppose you could rig up something with a battery operated system, however.

You didnt read any of the above posts or the see the monoxide detecters that require no exectricity did you? Why cant I have the little smiley face that beats the other with a stick on here?

Yes, I read that. I was simply shooting down his idea down. Besides, the household detectors are easier to find.

Damn a rebreather be sweet! Prolly goes for about 6 G though. Seriously though even with a bottle air or a rebreather, very high CO levels are simply too dangerous to play with. Very easy to die; you might as well be 200 feet underwater.

Wrong rebreather man. Thats SCUnderwaterBA not a SCBA which is what mines use.

| | | Rebreathers aren't cheap. They go for at least $6k each. If you need that kind of protection, you probably shouldn't be that deep in the mine in the first place.
