406 Bridge over 12 Mile Creek

When I was in Grds 5-6, I lived on Hainer (?) St. Right off St Paul. Down at the bottom of my street was the 12 Mile creek and was at the time one of the most explorable areas I can remember. My and my friends climbed the supports on the St Paul bridge across to the other side and back many times. hehe.. yes we did. We were stupid. There was also the little green bridge, the forest, the St. Catharines Fire training house, etc.

But one of the things I remember the most was, at the time they were just building the 406 extension through there. The concrete bridge that went over the 12 mile creek was amazing. Inside it was completely hallow. It had about 5 or 6 sections [chambers we called them] with three foot diametre tunnels between the sections.

Has anyone been here, or know if it's still accessible to this day? I'm assuming it's been closed off. Anyways, just curious. It's been quite some time..

Hey man, long time no talk!

This sounds like a pretty interesting thing to attempt to explore. I know a lot of big cement bridges are hollow inside (like the Confederation bridge) but I don't know if the insides remain accessable. I know for the Confederation bridge, the insides are accessable for maintenance I believe.. I could be wrong though.

I used to go down there all the time. Those maintenance "chambers" have been locked up, from what I've heard. I haven't been back in several years, so I can't tell you for sure if they are or not. It was kinda weir poking your head up inbetween two lanes of 100km/h traffic, that's for sure!

I assume you mean weird. It sounds awesome to me... What a rush that'd be...

Mike.. I'm not surprised to see you here. :]

Yes, I remember the split in the lanes.. yet I vaguely remember visiting the place when they opened the highway.

I figured the chambers were for construction purposes.

I remember some of the graffiti too.. TOTH. Whatever that meant.

Anyways, good to hear from someone else who knew the place.

Naw, not just for construction. You'll notice, just about any road that goes over a body of water (or other overpass not easily accessible from below) has these "chambers". They're mostly used when road work needs to be done and access below is required. Although I would imagine they're used frequently for inspection purposes as well.

Yeah, they've put heavy metal grates over all the entrances now. We were down there a few weeks ago to shoot the graffiti.

A sturdy pair of bolt cutters would likely do the job, tho.

You can always tell when you're watching Canadian television - the actors in the show are the same ones doing the commercials.
