i think i'm going to head there fairly soon, to scope it out. i really want to check it out. i've got a canon eos20d, so i'll gladly take some pictures as well.

If your new try Hearn, as for active security, well if you think about it long enough and are ballsy you can figure out a way around that problem. Not everything is the brickworks, but it shouldn't stop you.

Hearn = go down Leslie toward the leslie spit you'll see it.
Brickworks = Bayview extension, 555 bayview.

Please dont ask for access points.

Suggestions: Dont call to much attention to yourself, dont bring 10 friends and keep your eyes peeled and you should have no problem.

Well, the post-2000 awakening of this pursuit as something conscious of itself and its participants came pretty late to the party itself. Pol-economically, the peak of industrial upheaval, creative destruction, and a renegotiation of productive linkages and functions in much of Eastern Canada and North America was circa 1980-1997. This is when nearly all the plants and many of the institutional complexes we all have taken so much pleasure from seeing (or mourned having missed out on) were shuttered.

Successive recessions and languid growth periods swirled around a radical reshaping of the continental and global capitalist economy and its governmental shepherds. The same processes and fiscal crunches that were destroying old productive capacity and institutional resources also produced an extended period in which there were comparatively few economic forces impelling the physical destruction or renovation of the brick-and-mortar structures that had contained these factories and power plants and asylums. And so most of them sat empty and disused for many years before there were a bunch of dorks linked to each other over the internet who wanted to appreciate them.

Lakeview is an exception this, and a very political one: the reigning economics of electrical power generation and consumption in this province didn't support its closure and still don't (as the continuing swirl of uncertainty over the future of Nanticoke and Lambton demonstrates). The redevelopment worm has turned, however, and under a glut of new money requiring a sink, we're now seeing the rotting shells of the old order rapidly reinvested with new roles or razed to make way for buildings better able to serve the needs of the new economy and the priorities of current governments.

When the next long stagnation hits, it'll be the hulking pillars of post-war modernism that will be laid up and left for dead (this is already happening with smaller sites like the Bata headquarters, but right now there are the redevelopment dollars in play to erase these places quickly).

And so it goes.

I'll second what Particle Man and El Nerdo said, Lakeview has security, they do patrol, also the entry is very sketchy, especially the last time I went.

As for coal piles, they're mostly gone now. Go for something easier, Brickworks are probably your best bet.

Well, I've been to Lakeview close to a dozen times now and only once have I ever witnessed a patrol taking place and that was back when the place still had staff working inside around the clock. As for the entrance being sketchy, last time I went (late August) it was easier than ever. That's not to say there aren't certain things you should be mindful of (like walking around outside the front of the station), but I think the security risks involved with exploring Lakeview have been a bit blown out of proportion.

I'd be more concerned about any abatement that's might still taking place. It looked like they were at the halfway stage back during the Summer. It's possible there are still some areas sealed off where there's a lot airborne asbestos floating around in which case you'll probably want to have a respirator mask handy.

So for anyone who hasn't gone yet: go now before it's no longer there.

Seconded. When I was last there (August, I think?) they had already begun clearing things out on the inside, I can only imagine how empty it is now. A respirator would definitely be a good bet, especially if the asbestos removal has progressed.

WHen I went the security guard was driving around in his car (on the road). He didn't even see me even though he stopped, got out of the car and took a whizz.
There are a few ways in, u should just stop and look for them. Better yet, go at night. Just don't be a noob and start walking around with a 2mil torch light.

And please wear a mask.

If any of this makes you nervous try the hearn, or the brickworks before it get sealed up again at the end of this month.

Yeah, Lakeview is pretty hefty to start with.

If you do try Hearn .... scope it out as well. Security was doing hourly patrols the last time I was there.

Well since they move and sound like gorillas, i'd be hard to just run into them. But do stay out of sight, no need to call attention to yourself. U know dont stand in open areas for long, dont stand by windows, that type of stuff. Always consider which way you have to move incase you do hear someone.

I dont want to kill your fun or anything but coal powerplants aren't THAT interesting, particularly gutted ones. While I haven't been to hearn or lakeview I have been to a active plant and toured the entire building. The equipment, particularly the turbines are cool. Other then that a coal powerplant is not too different from an empty warehouse. When gutted I can't see it being too different from a big box.

Dont let this discourage you, just a thought. If I ever see you at a meet perhaps Ill share some of my photos (not allowed to post them sorry)

I'd have to disagree... Hearn is probably the coolest site I've been to, it's like the size of the freaking skydome. (Err... sorry, Roger's Centre)

To liken Hearn or Lakeview to an 'empty warehouse' would definitely not do them justice! The shear size of Hearn alone was enough to enjoy...let alone the catwalks and corridors and roof and subfloors...and on and on! While Lakeview is even bigger! They are far from large empty buildings...although admittedly becoming more so with the constant work going on. I'd say enjoy them while they are still accessible, definitely not places to miss in the UE scene around Toronto!

I am hoping to return to Lakeview again very soon, first visit wasn't long enough!

ok i took your guys advice, i went and scoped it out, it's not too far away from my house, and so i want to check out hearn. plus i just moved back to film photography so it would be awesome to take my first roll there. i'm going with a couple of friends that are just as interested and want to take some pinholes, digital, and some film. what's it like now? should we check it out or not? we'll be careful scoping it out and getting in obviously. if hearn's not much of an option, what would be the next best thing? just curious, and i'm planning on coming to a meet coming up so if i get in i'll bring my portfolio and all that for you guys to check out. thanks for any help
