| | University of Utah steam tunnels < on 11/16/2006 11:14 PM >
| | | For the past couple of months I've been working on a google earth .kmz file of every single cool UE/ghost town/hiking/rockhounding/nice view/weird place I've ever heard of. I asked the people in an IRC channel I frequent about possible locations to add to my "rough draft" and someone told me I should add the U steam tunnels. I'd never been in them myself, so he organized a small trip with me and some of our friends to go check them out. He couldn't quite remember where he used to get in (damn pot) so we ended up wandering around the campus with crowbars for a bit late night until we found a spot familiar enough to jog his memory and he took us to the entrance.
This is what a section of U steam tunnel looks like. Imagine that it's humid and hot as hell.
A lot of the tunnels would connect to the basement of some of the campus buildings.
They were keeping lab samples in here I guess.
A godamn human head!
There was danger all over the place. You know what, I'm sick of posting links. All the rest of the photos are in that gallery. Long story short, we wandered around a few tunnels until one opened up into a large, fairly well-lit and ventilated area that turned out to be the basement of a building, which was occupied even at 3 AM. My friends are assholes so they were far ahead of me when this happened, but I hear some guy chased them away. We got out of the tunnels and booked it. The end. I couldn't tell you for sure, I'm not very familiar with the area. We popped a manhole behind some bushes near a building on that circle where the natural history museum is.

| | | I'm a lover of my University's tunnels, and I must say, yours are quite a bit different from ours. (If you care to see what I mean, I made a DB entry of the ones here)
It seemed like a good idea at the time... |

| | | That actually sounds like a nice alternate to walking around in an empty building when its -10 degrees this winter. mmm, nice and warm, lol. I'll have to try that myself when things start cooling down.

| | | It was behind a closed door down a long dark hallway, beyond the crappy Internet fad graffiti. It's a pretty sweet place to check out, I want to go again when I get my digicam back in commission.

I don't know anything about the U of U steam tunnels but I would of thought that they would be dangerous in the winter. The ones at my school would have certain areas which would reach temperatures of over 150. One cool thing though is you could tell where a lot of the tunnels were since the sidewalks they were under would never accumulate any snow.
