1. Is 18 a bad age to start?
2. Where can I get stuff that I might need?
3. What's the best kind of place to start with?
4. Will I ever be as cool as you guys?

That's the most grandiose handle I've ever seen.

I'll answer:

1. No. There is no such thing as a bad age to start. Anyone can do this, as long as they have their physical and mental abilities in reasonable order. 18 is not that old, I started really at about 16-17, not seriously until I got a car two years ago, and I'm not even 20 yet.

2. Basics like flashlights can be found at any reputable hardware store. That's where I get most of my gear. There's plenty of threads around detailing what people bring, so I won' list them all, look herein the Tutorials section for that.

3. The best place, to me, is a place you know you can get into, with minimal security, just to get your feet wet. I wouldn't recommend anything like what Jester does for your first time, that's something that takes time to learn, and a high degree of skill in alot of the time. Go someplace simple.

4. Yes, as long as you don't post crap like Agent Smith and actually want to explore.

1- NO - 18's just about right

2- HarborFreightTools.com - cheaperthandirt.com - both quality gear stores

3- Somewhere safe where you won't get caught, start small - work up to the big stuff.

4- No, Sorry.

Cool there is a Harbor Freight Tools in town.
I life about an hour out of town.
So it might be a slow start for me.
But there are some cool mines around here.
And some Army stuff so I can't go off into the woods that much.

I am about an hour west of Fort Collins Colorado.

Hey Nat, welcome to the forums!

1. No way, that's a cool age to start! You got all your freedom to go out and go where you want to, plus you are old enough to drive and be responsible for yourself.

2. Try searching for army surplus and outdoorswear on the internet. Also take a look in shops that stock the same stuff. Army surplus is nice and cheap so it doesn't matter if it gets busted up, and stuff from an outdoorswear shop is really tough so it'll last a long time.

3. I started out with a "haunted house" as my first ever proper UE mission, with cameras, flashlights and a basic understanding of what UE was. Nice easy place to do, easy to get into easy to explore. Then I worked up from there.

4. Well I'd say that you shouldn't do UE if it's only to look cool. It should be something you feel passionate about. You know?

Mines in Colorado are typically a really bad bad bad idea!

There are something like 1700 mines in colorado and maybe 200 active.

Back during the 50's and 60's they thought it was a good idea to dump toxic waste in mines. They kept very bad records of where they put what.

There is plenty of cool stuff to see in Colorado, but I recommend staying out of the mines.

Don't know where you are , but I just got the latest Lowe's circular. 4d cell Maglight for 9.99 US! You can't beat that.
18 isn't too young or old to start. I get the impression that most of these people started as kids and it carried over. My gf was telling me about checking out abandoned houses when she was ten!
I was the same way, we'd walk through old places as little kids, not a care in the world for safety.

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

1... Yeah, it's a good age, but let me tell you that getting arrested after you turn 18 is a lot less fun than getting arrested before you do. I've experienced both, and they're a lot harder on official adults.

2... Home Depot and Ace Hardware have lots of good stuff.

3... An abandoned house could be good. Not too much security, not too many hazards, easy to find.

4... Well, definitely not as cool as Jester.

I don't think any of us are very "cool" at least not in the popular definition of the word. Most of the explorers I've met have been _fairly_ eccentric.

On our way to a target, UEM and UEC argued relative merits of Linux distributions... so you see a wide variety of people in the hobby. Coolness is relative.

Tips for the Noob. No problem.

As has already been said, start out small and work your way up to tougher targets as you feel confident in your experience and ability. Don't rush to do the *hard* explorations until you feel you're ready. Your biggest asset is usually knowledge, especially when it comes to potential dangers you may run into such as weak floors, sewer gases, and Asbestos of course...

Thanks for all the tips guys!

But I think I will need to find a good team before I do any thing.
I am more of a planer, info, and Equipment kind of guy.
I make a lot of my own tool and stuff like that so I work better with a team.

I think will have to wait till I move out too, I really am in the middle of no where so there is nothing (Other then Mines and I now know not to go there) to check out.

But I guess if any one on here need helo with info one stuff or any thing like that I am willing to help.
But really good with finding stuff online.

If you live in a town of even over a few thousand people, just put a couple of things (water, food, flashlight, camera) in a backpack and go walking. You will probably find a drain or abandonment, and even if you don't it will have been fun. At least for me anyway.

I live at a camp, in the middle of the woods.

So if you add the all the people on the same road maybe at mex 30 people around here.

So there is nothing around here at all.

And ya I have been all over the woods

Once while I was driving up either Wrist or Cache La Poudre I saw some kind of Water tank and a big building attached to it - looked sort of abandoned, fairly remote too - Do you know what I'm talking about?

While you are heading UP it's on the right hand side - you can kind of see the tank from the road and of course the access road (gated but jumpable).

I think that's up in your neck of the woods...Do you have a car?

I can't drive any of the camp stuff till 21 or the camp will not be coverd if I crash.

So till I get some weels I am kind to stuck...

1. You are starting at an older age than I began at. It isn't "too old" either. Good timing.
2. Camping supply stores. Flashlights, proper clothing, basic supplies are pretty much all that is needed.
3. Any place you can learn without getting caught would be a good beginning.
4. No

1) To agree with everyone else so far...there is no age that's too old to start. Although I myself did start at a younger age like Jake

2) Ebay, army/navy stores, camping stores, Walmart. All great places to go to for the basic equipment needed.

3) Probably something with easy access. Depending where you live this could be the farm down the road or the huge complex of buildings down the road. It's all relative my friend.

4) Sure...just don't be an ass.
