| | | Caution - Ontario Deer Season < on 11/12/2006 11:28 PM >
| | | Metro explorers please move along . . . For those who are not complete citidiots, you will know that Ontario Deer hunting season has commenced (with a bang . . .)
Woman shot dead in forest / CP Canada - Wednesday, November 08, 2006 @ 09:00 A 60-year-old Keswick man has been charged following a deadly hunting accident near Tottenham. Marianne Schmid, 67, of Adjala-Tosorontio, was killed Monday when she was shot while walking in the Simcoe County Forest. Provincial police say Schmid was pronounced dead at the scene. Autopsy results released yesterday show she died of a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. Frederick Thomas is charged with criminal negligence causing death and careless use of a firearm.
I often need to use trails though forests to get to some of my UrbEx locations . . . just use caution, or you could be looking at a REALLY BAD episode of 'Ted Or Alive'. For specific hunting season dates / areas refer to: http://publicdocs....ttachment_ID=20643 Safe Exploring rural people.

| | | I heard about that. Kind of scary. I heard she was wearing a red jacket, too. When I was younger I was never allowed to go into the forests on Blue Mountain when it was deer season. Even now my parents like to warn me when I go.

| | | This is really scary. Now I dont venture out in the woods too often but this weekend we went up to an abandonded military base, CFB Foymount and the only people we saw were hunters in full gear. I heard shots from outside and was suprised at how close they seemed but this place is in the middle of nowhere.

Yeah I remember filling up in Quadesville... I swear I heard duelling banjos in the background. That gas station was kinda neat... they sold groceries, hardware and car parts, all in one 500 sq. foot store.

| | | I was up in Bancroft hunting/atving/exploring, With a group of friends. On the second day I went ATVing and searching an old mine I aways go to.Athough I had an orange vest on, It was very nerve racking to hear gun fire in all different directions,It allway make me think what it would be like in a hardcore fire fight like in ww2, crazy s#it. Rifle bullets can travel somewhere in the mile or two range, So I decided to stay off the bush trails, Just my luck, I would of got shot, LOL. Hunting with rifles is only two weeks long up in bancroft, Let them have their fun.

| | | Wear orange during hunting season. In PA, on the first day of buck season in Nov, the number of hunters in the woods outnumbers the number of soldiers in the US Marine Corps. Deer hunting is not some imbecile hill-billy practice, it is good environmental stewardship.

| | | 'Oh lord' nothing, what is it with you guys? Deer are pests, they sure are cuter than rats and mice but they're just as bothersome. More deer are killed by automobiles on the highway than by hunters in the woods. From a herd management standpoint there should be more hunting - most of the natural predators that should be enjoying the deer have been thinned out or no longer exist in the deer's habitats. HERE'S A FAR MORE egregious ABUSE OF DEER: http://www.uer.ca/...urrpage=1&pp#post0 [last edit 11/16/2006 5:54 PM by DevilC - edited 1 times]

| | | I do not know for a fact, but I have read many hunting mags and there a lot of deer in northern parts of the U.S.A. A real hazard when driving at dawn or dusk, compared to us guys here in central Ontario, Out of about a dozen different groups of hunters I know threw friends, Only about 10 deer where shot. We only got 2 Doe tags out of 6 guys applying. Hunting is a must to control Hunger and population among deer....

| | | Man, you folks be careful out there! I'll echo DevilC and say bright flourescent orange is the only way to go. Lots of test have shown how much more visible it is than red or yellow. Even then, some idiot with a few beers in him can do you in. Thats part of the reason I have started hunting with a muzzle loader during black powder season: at least they can't shoot me as far away! And I'll also chime in and say that hunting is now absolutely necessary. Mankind has f$%ked up the ecosystem so much that things are out of whack. Predators no longer exist in sufficient numbers to control deer and the like. DevilC, I'm not sure I'd call deer pests! They are very cool to see, and even better to eat! [last edit 11/16/2006 9:00 PM by Jonsered - edited 1 times]
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | They can also be dangerous. During mating season, a very large buck attacked my brother's car near Alliston, putting his antlers right through the windshield and into the seat.

Yeah while i agree that Deer can be pests when they are overpopulated, WTF does that have to do with the rich city boys who go hunting on weekends, and all the hicks who who kill them for fun. At the very least its more of a sport for most I suspect.

Yup Yup. Even more of a problem when they shoot people. Anybody who is blind enough to mistake a deer for a person (in the cas eof an article, they should neither have the right to drive, or to shoot things.
