Decew Tunnel

Supposedly used to be a supply tunnel for St. Catharines waterworks. I'm guessing it goes for 1/4 mile or so, but I didn't have the gear, and it was making me freekin' claustrophobic to go in that far...

Ceiling height seemed around 6' the whole way I could see.

nice find

Ditto. Definitely go "all the way" next time. Gotta love tunnels (you find the sexiest miners in them).

That looks very fun actually. Could you describe the entrance without giving it away?

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

The entrance is publically accessable. It is off the side of a gorge in the escarpment...not too bad of a scramble.
It was obviously gated of at one time, but not right now. I assume it will be barricaded again one people discover it isn't...

Cool. If this is just downstream of Decew Falls, area waterfall enthusiasts call it an old mine tunnel. I wonder what the reality was.

That is the one, but it is definitely NOT a mine tunnel. I located an old (1945) survey. The tunnel is about 4000ft long, almost arrow straight, and is referred to on the drawing as "St. Catharines Waterworks Tunnel". It shows that there may have been a 24" water main (pipe) to St. Catharines running in it. I'm guessing it stopped that function when the Decew GS was extended.

One the survey it shows the tunnel dead-ending at a 4"thick concrete bulkhead (but again, that was in '42)

Those tunnels are for St. Catharines Hydro. There is one just beside the Decew Falls.. When you climb down into the gorge walk towards the falls along the steep ledges, under the outcroppings of the gorge walls, etc and you'll come across one of these tunnels. way back in the day when I went there, there was only a chain from one side to the other. Water flowed out of there at a pretty good pace.. but not always.. I've walked through and saw small opening at the end of the tunnel but didn't get to the very end. It was pretty creepy and who knew when they'd raise the gates and let the water rush through. Oh, the good times. :]

Okay, as you'll see on that page it mentions another tunnel a little ways downstream. That's the one I was referring to.

I was in this tunnel a few years ago, it goes in around 100 feet or so and ends at a large sealed pipe.

Decew rings a bell, is there a generating station nearby?
