| | | my comment was justified when I went down there the cataphiiles we met were reluctant to be fiendly with us thinking we were tourists who had paid a guide, when they realised we were not and we were navigating ourselves they showed some respect and the socialising began. The catacombs are like no other location in the world and should be treated with respect and not tuned into a tourist attraction

Seems like a bit of a contradiction...you know, the visiting it, as a tourist.

Not really. A tourist takes the tour without even caring about that place, it's history, different personal routes or that the person he's treating like a mini slave barely makes a living from what he's payed from but still has to put on a fake smile to get a big tip (all these things would surface if the tourist would stop beeing focused on getting self gratification in a small amount of time on the expense of others and just treating the other people as...people: talking to the guy who carryes his golf crosses or whatever, who gives him the tour). I think that's why allot of people where offended when they where treated impersonal (like those mini slaves). An explorer I like to think has a mind of his own and he's not afraid to use it to see and document the real world. Visiting - the same action (that apparently creates a contradiction) BUT with TOTALY different intention.

| | | I see your point and agree with everything above. In the end, although I haven't been there myself yet, I HAVE been reading on the catacombs for over 15 months now, hell I even autotranslated posts from CKzone and had the newest map printed out in full size (the one Slyv posted) But insulting someone who knows nothing on Cataphile courtesy , without explanation, won't make them understand their mistake.

| | | wow, I just checked in on this thread and am still shocked by some of the replies. Alias, How can you make such harsh asumptions about someone you don't even know. Your comments are biggited and judgemental. I can't believe the assumptions about me that you have expressed. Saying that I would treat a guide as a mini slave or not have respect for the sites that I visit is un aceptable. How can you be so self rightous with such an attitude of condemnation. Honestly, the comments that have been made about me are inacurate and un called for. Lighten up. Learn about who you are judging and definetly learn about some one before you attack. I'm sick of this debate. If your interested in exploration and have something constructive to say I'd love to hear what you have to say. If you want to be a judgemental eletist go join an county club.
ps. I'll post some pic and such after toy fair when I have more time. peace,

| | | wow. children, calm down. ok dude, you wanna know what they mean by tourist? Its not being foreign coming into a country. Its the idea that the exploration aspect is taken out becasue you need someone to hold your hand through the experience. for example: 1. An explorer goes out, does research, finds a location, brings a friend maybe, and explores the building with little to no knowledge about how the experience will be and being okay with pushing on. 2. a tourist doesnt do the work, finds someone to hold their hand through the experience, and generally gets a free ride off someone else's work why does this matter? because, despite having a LOT of tourists on this site who want to go back to the same places over and over again and find nothing new, the idea is to be explorers in the sense that i mentioned above. the question is, why not do the work yourself and go in with a small sense of the place? yeah, tons of people have been in there, but your experience is your own so it still keeps the explorer quality. goddamnit, i'll never try to explain this while having a hangover again. ugh,
I hate all of you |

| | | Now that DjMalign mentions it, Newbies, calm down! Where are the pics? I thought Gearhead might have got buried in the catacombs No offense Gearhead, but drive-by trolls are a dime a @ dozen at UER. Big words and no pics cause flashbacks a that great explorer of bs, lord so-so. You got time to give us lip service but not even one pic. Elitist is such a troll buzzword, spell it right next time! Gearhead, too much whining, but no dining. Where's the feast?

Now that's interesting. Dangerous in what ways, and what is the name of the force that guards them. How do they patrol?

| | | Dangerous ? Yes it is a vast playground and you can easily get lost. Some small things would help to minimize the danger (good map of the quarry, some aditional lights, etc...) The current name of the police patrol is the BICS (Brigade d'Intervention en Carriere Souterraine). They can be dressed just like you and me. They usually are in the quarries when it is supposed to have a lot of people (understand friday and saturday night). The trend is to fine everybody and not make some prevention. The tourists are the rookies, the newbies. Nothing else... Everybody has already been a tourist one day.

The biggest danger downthere is your own stupidity really. It's not like there's crocodiles waiting to eat you alive... Vast, yes, that's why you need maps and other tools. Catacombs are not dangerous, your studipity is. Not having the proper equipment, tools or acting in a stupid way is what is dangerous. But that's also true about life in general... Idiots will be idiots. Be it on the street, in an abandoned asylum or down under Paris.

glad to hear you made it. my 31 hours down there were incredible. going into the catacombs was #1 on my wishlist of things i wanted to do in my lifetime. even after i was above ground again, i thought i was in the catacombs for the next three days and even walked funny as if i was still trudging through the water and playa. there is nothing like it in the world. maybe after being down there, you can now see why it took a little effort to get anyone to be your guide. i am very glad it is this way, as it protects the catacombs. i wish our beloved asylums and other important sites in the US were as protected as the catacombs. the cataphiles have their own kind of self moderating system, they self police and generally are loyal to one another. it's like an alternate world with it's own governement. i was fascinated. the crew on ckz are great, and there are a small handful on their with fantastic english. stay in touch with those you met. as for the earlier aggressions on this thread- don't let that discourage you. there are all kinds on this board, a huge variety of people. some are downright mean, some are very kind, and some have wild senses of humor. and then a whole spectrum in between. many people on here are wary of strangers and newbies, while some on here will tell you every location they have ever heard of in their life, just because you have an email address and they have some ego need. if you ever want to swap stories, video, photos, etc. about the catacombs, count me in. that goes for anyone else who has been to the catacombs or has any juicy links or articles. cheers.
