Geodesic Domes From Hell (and other stuff)

ottonabee and I drove out to Peterborough County and beyond on Sunday.

Our first stop was in the Pigeon Lake/Buckhorn Lake/Upper Chemong Lake chain area to visit the Geodesic Domes From Hell. Admittedly, these particular geodesic domes aren't the massive, modern, glass and pleasing-to-the-eye variety. In fact, these are made of an environmentally sensitive compound that is slowly decomposing and leaching into the ground water table. These geodesic domes, in better times, house kids attending Camp Maple Leaf. The camp still operates in the area but these dome camping structures were used when the camp was under different ownership. They now sit on the property of a marina where the owner has no motivation to demolish them despite the toxic nature of the domes...

Then we stopped by the long-abandoned Oak Orchard Marina on beautiful Buckhorn Lake. The marina itself has been gutted and looted of anything valuable years ago. An outboard motor testing "lake" which is likely polluted beyond imagination is the likely cause as to why this area has sat dormant and not turned into a developer's lakeside condo/mansion dream. Evidence of a once-thriving lake resort can be found throughout the property that has long since been reclaimed by nature...

Then we started to drive back to the GTA when we decided to check out the long lost Omemee Ski Resort. Despite several still-active ski hills north of Omemee, this particular hill seems to have been abandoned decades ago and is almost fully reclaimed by nature. ottonabee will have a full LDB entry for this location shortly...

It was a good Sunday RE experience. We met some nice folks on our travels and, thankfully, did not get caught by anyone this time.

what were these domes made of? asbestos and fiberglass? couldn't be too bad if they built them for a kid's camp. how old are they?

Are you now, or have you ever been?

I can't remember what they guy we talked to said they were but the informal name he used was pronounced liked "U-fee". They were last used for children's cabins probably in the 80s I think.

The Oak Orchard marina is attached if not part of the complex that once held the testing area for O.M.C. (Outboard Marine). Duncarin mentioned the location in the Ontario thread a while back. He mentioned that it belonged to Three Buoys who used the man made lagoon for storage of houseboats. One person we talked with said the location once held a banquet hall facility and much more. We did find old shuffle board pads and the pads of many former building sites. We were also informed that the buildings were removed for tax reasons. I guess back in the day O.M.C. would bring all the big wigs and families in tow for a vacation while testing the latest gear.

Here is a link to an information page on "you-fee" as it is commonly called or
Urea Formaldehyde

http://www.carsond....com/OBS/uffi.html

If indeed the domes are made of this material then it drastically alters the date which we thought the domes were constructed. Of course the product could be older than the article states

A former customer of mine in Campbellford bought a house insulated with Urea Formaldehyde. He was quite proud of the low cost he bought it for.

Anyways, cool shots, guys... however, due to the title of this thread, I'm now going to be having night-terrors about Geodesic Domes from Hell.

"AHHHHHHHHH! THE DOMES!!!! DOMES!!!!!!"

Is that the stuff that they called blown insulation. I remember having that done to our house in the 70's. Drilled hole piped it in and filled the hole with what looked like a cork. They blew a hole right through the wall into the bathroom and sprayed the crap all over the place.

A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind.

Thanks for the post Fedge. From what I've been told, the marina and surrounding lands has been bought by a developer, but an environmental impact study has to be done before development can proceed.
If you stood at the boathouse looking south across the water, you would have been able to see my parents place.

Just five - and they are a hot topic of rage among neighbors and the marina that owns the property the domes are on. The neighbors want the domes removed as they are lowering property values while the marina could not give a damn.
