| | | Right next to a long term care centre under renovation, this 2 storey stone house sits neglected. It is on the grounds of an active senior's home, but I parked in fron of it on the weekend and took a peek inside without actually entering. The windows are mostly broken, and the elements have taken their toll inside. With the adjacent building under renovation it is possible this house will either get fixed up or demo'd. I'll check the site plan and let you all know!

It's right next to the RCMP training centre and across from the Madonna Nursing Home. I'm gonna go back with a hardhat and boots to see if I can go inside without being intercepted.

| | | More pix from a visit this morning. Note the serious settlement, gaping holes and sagging stairs. Water was coming in through the roof onto the stairs making them soft. I decided not to use the top flight since it was really sagging. Seems the nursing home used the place for many years as a place to store junk, so nothing remains from the last real inhabitants.

Wow! That's a great case of nature reclaiming itself. Left on it own, that'll just rot away to nothingness. Reminds me of the last apartment building I lived with the Super telling me "we'll get the roof fixed in a jiffy"... [last edit 9/29/2006 8:04 PM by fedge - edited 1 times]

| | | i grew up in orleans and i always loved that house. if i'm not mistaken (and i very well could be) there's a photo of it in its former glory in the convent glen loeb. unless they took those down too. last time i was in the area i noticed some signs of neglect from houses in the mer bleue/anderson road area - it could prove to be nothing but i have a hunch that as the suburbs encroach some residents might be bought out, or just up and leave.

| | | yup, they are still there hanging from the ceiling. one pic at the loeb that always caught my eyes was of the normandie hotel. being old enough to remember it before they tore it down to put the OC park n ride off champlain st. it was a truly neat building. I've heard a few stories bout the place from orleans/cumberland locals who frequented the bar every fri. night.

| | | According to the 1879 Historical Atlas of Carleton County, this house and land was owned by Dr. William Ralph Bell, surgeon, of England. He settled here in 1866, which puts the date of the house's construction between 1866 and 1879. His stature as a doctor explains why he had such a large stone house with a commanding view of the Gatineau hills. It looks like the catholic church bought the land later, and may have run the senior's home for some time. The wallpaper in the stairs looks very Victorian and may be original. I'll have to take a piece and have it dated.

| | | I was talking to the current tenant/renter of the of the building a few months ago. The building is going to be flattened by winter. He has to move out of the garage area. Its an Electro Mechanical maintenance shop that he runs out of the garage space. Contact me if you want his number to get legitimate entrance to the place. He's very accommodating, there has been soft porn images shot on the upper floor before and quite a few other photographers have been through. I see the bird shit encrusted motorcycle helmets are gone from the staircase now, it was quite comical. Pictures from winter 2004 [last edit 10/3/2006 12:21 AM by Mutt - edited 1 times]

and another one bites the dust. what a shame. that house is beautiful. i wish most residents of orleans took some interest, or at least had some respect for, the history of the land that their suburban starter castles stand on. the orleans/cumberland area has a rich history and there are still quite a few older people who have great stories about it, especially in cumberland village. the cumberland historical society used to have a room in the public library at the ray friel centre. i don't know if they're still there but it's worth spending some time in if they are.

| | | Yep, I just saw the site plan for the renovations, and this place is going to be nuked and replaced with landscaping. Pity. So, does this count as a find? [last edit 10/4/2006 3:29 PM by Mutt - edited 1 times]
