secrets of the glebe

I don't know why I haven't thought of posting this earlier, but back when I was in high school, I remember attending a party of a friend of a friend at his parents house while they were gone which was in the glebe. although modernized, the house was well over 100 years old. it was a pretty big party but ended up meeting the host later in the night and got to talking, especially about his basement. apparantly there is a network of crude tunnels that connect to other basements in the area. he took me on a quick tour downstairs and showed me around. some of the tunnels slanted up/downhill some wide, some narrow and a few entrances sealed off, prolly to other ppls basements. we were down therre for at least a half an hour and could've spent more time searching. I also learned that glebe collegiate has a fallout shelter buried underneath the football field.

anyways I did a quick search on tunnels+glebe and came up empty handed. does anyone else know about these tunnels?

Never heard about them before. Sounds interesting, keep us informed of your finds.
I still have yet to explore the main storm drain system downtown, but will be doing so in the near future

Would someone be so kind so as to define 'glebe' for me? I'm assuming you're talking about a block or a neighbourhood?

Glebe as in the Ottawa neighbourhood south of the core, right? Possibly a '20s bootlegging relic like the one in St. Catharines.

The term Glebe refers to lands owned by a parrish church. The Glebe area of Ottawa was once owned by the Anglican church and was sold off about 100 years ago, but it is still refered to as The Glebe.
Here's a map of the area called the Glebe. http://www.ottawakiosk.com/map8.html

I saw some under Main Street. I'm still working very VERY hard on smoozing a friend that has an "interesting" basement... If all goes well, I might get a grand tour, by November 14. And I might get a great contact for abandoned places in Glebe too.

This beig said, there's gotta be some Historical society in Glebe that would precisely know about all this...

Wow... secret tunnels in Ottawa? Suddenly this town just got a whole lot less boring

If anyone ever gets the chance to check it out and bring a friend, I would LOVE to go... same deal for Glebe Collegiate - if anyone has a contact there....

I met with my neighbour yesterday, he just graduated from there this year. he told me that there IS in fact a fallout shelter under the football field. the school still uses it as a storage facility.

as for that basement house (or houses) that may be a tricky one. I'll have go to the glebe and start asking ppl.
