|  | | | I was thinking about this today after I was reading http://forgotten-n...sub/yellowsub.html earlier. The New York City area seems to have multiple ship graveyards where boats are abandoned on the banks of a body of water and left to rot.
Are there any sites like these in Florida that anyone knows of? Thinking about it, the state is surrounded by so much water, I imagine there are probably sites like this somewhere. I did a google search but couldn't find much.

| | | | Never heard of that around here...probably for two main reasons. First, there's relatively little in the way of ship (not boat) building down here. There are some yards in Tampa and Jacksonville that I know of. I think there's little in the way of shipping headquarters and stuff here in Florida (believe it or not), at least relative to the northeast. Second (and most importantly), the key attraction for Florida is the beach. There is NO WAY anyone is going to abandon a ship on the beach in Florida! There have been some ships that have washed up after having mechanical problems, but the owner of the ship is responsible for removing the ship as soon as possible.

| | | | Tampa has a ship repair yard, but there aren't any graveyards that I'm aware of. Closest thing I've found are tipped over yachts in canals near Miami after the hurricanes last year. Nothing remotely comparable to Staten Island's yard.

| | | | there are some great spots right over the border in AL, and others in Pascagoula MS. Tons of builders and rebuilders in these areas. Basically the coast between Mobile AL and Gulfport MS is the best spot I've found, next to the N/E.

It looks pretty cool except for the harsh conditions those people have to deal with breaking them apart. I would hate to have to work there but they would be fun to explore.

| | | | I spotted a yard off the intracoastal here in Jax that looks like it takes old ships and scraps them down. That's probably why there isn't a whole lot in the way of graveyards, at least on the eastern coast of FL.

I've traveled to Marathon and Key west as recently as early '06( ok, so not that recent) and still saw easily over a dozen yachts, schooners, etc laying in knee-high water everywhere. Only problem is, you have to find a place to park, then walk over a quarter mile in shallow water to get to them.....
Has anyone been to the Keys more recently and seen them still out there?

| | | | Yep they are still there. Most of them aren't that big, but ocasionally you'll see a good sized private sailboat cocked at a 45 degree angle, perched in 3 ft of water.
You can see them from US 1 (the main drag), but probably alot more if you take a few side streets that more closely follow the shores of the larger islands.

| | | | I lived in West Palm Beach for seven years (I now live in Houston Texas) and have not seen any ship grave yards or anything like it. The east coast is to deep any thing that sinks is completely submerged and if it is in shallow water it gets pounded by the surf. try looking south in the keys and on the west coast of Florida. I look for wrecked ships on the Texas coast, I use flashearth.com to do may "scouting" one of the best known and most easy to get to ship in Galveston is the S.S. Selma (latitude 29* 20' 39.3" longitude 94* 47' 10.5")
