Alexandria- Ghost Neighborhood

Hey Folks,

Just wanted to let you all know that after recently moving into a new apartment in Southern Alexandria (just off route 1, a little bit beyond the beltway) I made an amazing find: basically, and entire neighborhood of abandoned houses. It's a little side street of the main thoroughfare of Huntington Ave. Densely wooded, very overgrown. There are some thick trees and brush at the corners of this dead-end alley and as such it would be very easy to miss as you speed by in a car. About 11 houses in various states of decay. Very strange to stumble across such a thing in a big city, but route 1 has a lot of junk like that. Not a whole lot of vandalism (yet?), and a sign for Tysons Service Corporation has recently been put up, along with new notes advertising the public that they will fully prosecute anyone who enters. I hit it up yesterday and went into two houses. Very interesting stuff. If anyone is up for it (easily accessibly via the Huntington Metro stop (last stop on the Yellow line), I'm up for taking a team down there and checking it out. With these new signs up, I strongly suspect they will be demolishing the place soon, so time is of the essence. I hope to have a DB location entered later.

Regards,
CD

Sounds interesting, I'd be up for it. I live In Burke, VA, probably 15 or so minutes away. Any Saturday or Sunday works for me, or any evening for that matter since it's so close.

Nothing left to see I'm afraid. It's all been torn down to make room for townhouses. Foley Street and Hunting Creek should anyone wanna look it up (off Huntington).

You know, I was wondering about that too. The buildings had obviously been abandoned, but there were still some signs of life. Ie. some of the letters and such littering some of the houses were as recent as mid-2005, so I was wondering what could have happened to make everyone disappear so fast (yeah I know, I have a Stephen King thing going on). In any case, what I figure probably happened is that some real estate firm bought up the houses at a good price, the families grabbed whatever they wanted to take and left the rest (figuring that the houses would be demolished and the detrius carted away in dump trucks- which it was). I'm just sad that I only got a crack at 3 or 4 houses of the 15 or so there were. It was pretty sweet, though nothing really cool.

Those houses were flooded out most likely. There was flooding the prevous summer.
