Great opportunity to get inside some old coast defense bunkers in SF Bay area!

But there's a catch...

1. It's extremely short notice (sorry, I just joined this UE group yesterday).
2. You have to join this CDSG group.
3. The fee for this conference in October isn't exactly cheap, BUT it gets you legal access into some old coastal bunkers which are usually sealed up pretty well, as well as design & construction documents showing the layout, & other historical info.

Take a look at the Coast Defense Study Group web page at http://www.cdsg.org

& then look at their CDSG Annual 2006 Meeting in San Francisco, October 9 - 13 page.

Sounds very cool. But if you want to attend the thing, you probably ought to send them email to make sure it's not too late.

$325 for registration, yikes! It seems like it might be worth it though.
incidently I was at battery Wallace in the Marin Headlands the other day; and while I was there walking around there was one door into the bunker that was freshley painted but was still welded shut. furthermore when I approached the door I could hear an alarm klaxon sounding inside. on my return trip I asked a ranger about it but she had no idea, so she found another ranger that told me it was a temperature alarm in some sort of deep storage section inside... have any ideas as to what they are storing in batteries that have been vacant for almost 70 years?
I have some pics of the inside of a nearby location that is definately in use, but I don't feel comfortable posting them publicly.

Battery Wallace is in use by the NPS for storage -- lots of junk (& I really do mean 'junk') such as miles & miles worth of power & communication/control cables from the Bay Area Nike sites, but then a few of the old rooms do have some things of historic value inside, and some of those rooms are temperature & humidity-controlled.

I have lots of interior images that I can post sometime.

Battery Wallace is intrusion-alarmed up pretty well.

That CDSG group will be spending 45 min poking around the inside during their conference. When you factor the legal, interior access that conferences gets you, vs. the trouble you'd get into if you got caught B&E'ing/criminal trespassing your way inside them, the conference looks like a good deal!

Otherwise, the person to talk to about Battery Wallace if you're in the area is John Porter, the NPS Ranger who manages the Nike SF-88 Museum.

I would love to see the inside of Battery Wallace I only wish I had the cash to cover it (having to pay for classes and an apartment blows:-P) if you ever have a cheaper opportunity I'm there. On a side note I got to go inside one of the doors at this location:

someone forgot to lock one of the padlocks lol; there were some very interesting things stored inside.

Cheers!

Here are a couple of the inside of Battery Wallace, taken earlier this year. Not sure if I mentioned it in my prior post or not, but during the Nike era, Battery Wallace was used by the Nike SF-88 site (& maybe nearby SF-87 too) for storage.

Yeah, I went to Wallace about a year ago and that thing was going off. It really bothered me. I would stay up at night wondering what the hell was in there. I figured it was some sort of cold war era computer that was feeding information about the russians to the white house. Either that or a machine that goes BING!

Tell me about it! that sucker bothered me so much I had to ask two rangers about it on a subsequent visit... and I'm still not satisfied lol! Though the pics help to ease my troubled condition

I was inside Battery Wallace in the Marin Headlands last week. The alarm noise is still chirping, and while the humidity sensor alarm was a good explanation cuz they do have humidity-controlled rooms inside, that beeping noise is coming from about 20' inside that one outer door, and it is NOT a humidity sensor alarm that's tripping.

I've seen alot of batteries and bunkers in my day, but where exactly is Wallace? I know of the others near the Marin shores, including the ones on both sides of the GGB and over at the CNWS.

I know that there are tunnels under the bunkers of the fort just west of the north end of the GG bridge. I've seen the covers and entrances, but never got a chance to explore them. Any idea to the reality of their existance?

Oddly enough, a couple of the companies we work with use the bunkers for storage for well sampling and enviro equipment, as well as some temporary storage for wastewater byproduct. Since they have fairly expensive, portable equipment, some of the alarmage may be due to that, or other, similar arrangements made with contractors. I know that during the late 90s, when the cleanup of the Presideo/Highlands was in full swing, most of the bunkers had been converted into storage for the contractors operating on site.

Can you be more specific about which bunkers you're referring to?

There really isn't a fort "just west" of the N side of the GGB. Dou you mean Fort Baker, which is just to the E of the GGB, with Horseshow Cove, where the USCG Station Golden Gate is?

If so, Ft Baker has some bunkers tunneled into the cliff. They were built to store mines & mine-related stuff during WW-II when there were two rings of mines out in the ocean protecting the Golden Gate. They don't got too far back inside the cliff, all are owned by NPS GGNRA, secured, and mostly unused due to contaminants.

Some tored the mines, some stored the mine fuses, one was a power house, & if i remember right, one small one was a telephone switchboard.

Ya east... Probably Fort Baker.

There were bunkers and batteries, but there were also tunnels near the main hill (due northeast from the historical cannon site) They are now surrounded by razor-sharp fencing. I have seen the entrances, but don't know of their true existance.

This would date back into the Civil War era when they used Alcatraz Island, Fort Point and Fort Baker as the three-point defense system to protect the bay and surrounding cities. There were, at one time, cannons that were lined up along the ridge of Fort Baker as well as both of the other forts on the island and Fort Point, and the ammo and other items were stored inside these tunnels (or quite possibly today's bunkers).

Is this more clear as to what I am asking? I'll try to get a pic of the area as well (if I can find a few).

Thanks Ryan, I know what site you're talking about now. It's Battery Cavallo, which I think was constructed just after the Civil War, but first actually armed the time of the Spanish-American War. I've been inside the compound a couple times, as recently as 2 weeks ago & it is pretty cool to see.

It had a variety of minor uses during WW-I & II (searchlight station, Coincidence Range Finder station, etc.), but as a coast defense gun emplacement site, it'd been replaced by nearby sites like Battery Duncan & Battery Yates.

I know that from the outside of the secured compound (the site is off-limits to the public due to good ol' endangered-species butterflies & because NPS GGNRA doesn't currently have the resources to be able to open it up to the public) it looks like the tunnels are extensive, but really all they are is some "traverses" & some storage magazines. Troops still would have had to walk outside to get from gun to gun.
