i'm sure everyone around this area has seen the mine off Marmora mine road, but I was wondering if the structure over looking the huge pit is abandoned. There is a company still operating further down the road, so im not sure if this is their property or what. If no one knows, it looks interesting and I'm sure it would be worth checking out.

Last time I was there the buildings were very abandoned, I highly doubt anything has changed since then. While you aren't able to see it, there is an entry for them in the LDB. The buildings are on the property of the adjacent company however there are ways in that will minimize your chances of being spotted by any workers there.

Last time I was there (2004). All the buildings close to the mine were abandoned. There is/was an active plant nearby, and you could see people moving about, but they didn't bother the two of us when we were there.

I posted the photos I took here.

I also have a "stack" of B&W photos from my girlfriends grandfather of the mine when it was in operation. I can scan and post if anyone is interested.

It's a pretty cool place if you're not expecting much more than an impressive landscape. A guy that watches over the pit on weekends said the truck drivers get a laugh watching people (through binoculars) do photo shoots with nudes from the ridge on the other side of the pit, apparently it's a fairly regular occurence. It's still surrounded by active mines, but they don't really care if you're there to take photos or hang out, according to the 'security' guy I talked to. Must have been true, there was a group of about 15 kids camping at the bottom of the pit when I talked to him, all he was interested in was 3 kids on dirtbikes that had tried to smash up the building (like it could be damaged more).

For those who care:

The buildings:

Another pano (water's at least 25 feet deeper than the other pano posted earlier):

If I was to visit this place, should I bother to "check in" with security if they're cool, or just get in the usual way?

Park in the parking lot for the viewing platform (at the end of Marmora Mine Road), walk through the gaping hole in what's left of the fence. He's not really a security guard, more of a semi-retired employee that just kind of keeps an eye on the place on weekends. You likely won't even run into him, as he wanders all of the active property as well (there's a ton of atv/snowmobile trails running through the rest of the property, which is much, much larger than the closed pit mine).

Those are great shots mortimer. I keep hearing about this mine as a friend of mine has checked it out before and he says its been slowly flooding over the years.

When was this mine abandoned..?

it's a squeeze, but you can crawl on your belly into the mine shaft. the air got thick and dusty a couple meters in though so we shimmied back out. probably filled with a lot of stuff no one wants in their lungs. =\

When was this mine abandoned..?

77 or thereabouts, from dusty memory banks. And not technically abandoned, this pit was closed, but it's on the same property as a number of active pits. Bit of trivia, this beast once fed iron ore to Bethlehem Steel, and when it opened, the Marmora mine was the biggest open pit in the world (that record's been beaten many times since).

Yeah, I climbed around that stuff a few years ago. This summer I made sure to have the sun gun and respirator with me, since apparently the two structures still standing are connected underground, but everything was meshed up tighter than a nun's behind, no dice. Maybe next year when the local kids rip everything apart again.

yep.

as far as i know the gravel pit that is still active is owned by the same company.. but as to my knowledge it is subcontracted to another corp. i know one of the contractors that runs in the pit... i will call someone i know who just happened to have recently quit from working there for the past twenty years... will post again will all new info...

If the structure(s) you're talking about is/are the one(s) in the links I posted above, then yes, it/they is/are abandoned. If not, I'm not sure what other structures you might be talking about.

this place is less than an hour away from my cottage. i've been there 4 or 5 times, and passed by the place while dirtbiking. i think there may be light security there. i was chased by an employee there, not sure if he was security or not, but got on our bikes and just rode away. it's right beside a trail, if any of you have a dirtbike or an atv. it's on the hastings heritage trail, but they closed it off. obviously somebody made a trail right beside it to connect to the original trail. there may be more abandoned buildings on the other side of the trail, if any of you want to check that out.
