And then there were bulldozers...

So, I was heading out this evening to find an abandoned motel not too far from here that I'd seen a while back but hadn't gotten a chance to check out. I decided to take some back roads hoping to come across something new, and not 10 miles from my house I passed one of those boarded-up 1-room school houses that seem to dot the countryside surrounding Columbus.

Then I noticed just behind it there was a boarded up stone cottage.

Needless to say I hit the brakes and turned around. I've always had a thing for abandoned houses...particularly ones that look like they were really nice at some point...which always makes me wonder why the hell anyone would leave mansions and houses on valuable land to rot. This house was no exception. Pure stone cottage, small, but it sits on 9+ waterfront acres and is next to a marina.

Luckily a guy with a fishing pole was walking by and I stopped and asked him if he knew anything about the house. Sure enough. The house is owned by the Columbus Division of Water and the school house is owned by Parks and Recreation. It's been abandoned for some time and while many people have expressed interest in buying and restoring the house (it's prime real estate...right on the water!), the city will not sell and nobody seems to know why. What's more, the city plans to demo the house soon. What a shame. Luckily, he said, the schoolhouse will remain standing.

I thanked him for his time and as he left he said, "You're welcome to contact the Division of Water yourself, you never know." And that's just what I plan to do, although not in the conventional way. Luckily my boyfriend's uncle works for the Columbus Division of Water and in the past has been able to help me get information on a place or two.

I found a couple of ways I would be able to get inside, but since it was light out and there's a busy marina just down the hill, I decided to leave the B&E for another day. Besides, I think I'll see if my boyfriend's uncle can get me in legally before I try on my own.

The fisherman was really nice. He was carrying a plastic bag and told me that he walks around the area and picks up trash that other fisherman leave behind. He seemed to be pretty sad about the fate of the little stone cottage, and I don't blame him.

Damn Columbus for demolishing everything. ::shakes fist::

This city is my jungle gym...Look at this big great world that we live in...There's lots of fun to be had on these streets...We can take a ride, just you and me...It's a jungle gym

I shake my fist with you!!! But it is a really magnificent house...and the schoolhouse is so neat. Reminds me of a place out here in Chicagoland called the Little Red Schoolhouse. They turned it into a really neat museum.

I know more about blood than you

I think Ohio gov. is really F'ed up some times. But man that looks like one of those house's in a movie where 3-4 young teens go in, then get rapped, they find stuff in the basment, a lab, etc. But back to topic. Man i shake my fist with you guys also. I just noticed that i was still on here (10 minuets ago i left) but i found a picture of my gramps agins a cottage, that strangely enough looks like that one. But hope you can get in there legaly.

I got 4X4 and chains. So if you want to explore that old farm way back in the woods, we can go ;)

Its obvious why the city will not sell it. Someone in the elected government (prolly a commissioner or maybe the mayor) wants to build or develope it or for some reason has thier eye on it. Governments very often like to get ahold of valueable property like this and then either funnel it to pet projects (run by extended family and donors) through so-called redevelopment corporations (a roundabout way of fixing the place up using taxpayer money for the benifiet of one of thier buddies) or simply as a sale to thier buddies.

Its a shame, alot of nice real estate sits idle so that these people can get rich at the general public's expense. Of course, it would all stop if the populus actually held them accountable, but everyone is far too busy to do that.
