When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

| | | Camera: Canon Elan IIe Lenses: Canon 24-70L, Canon 16-35L Film: Ilford HP-5 400 Finally got out and shot some film. I'm not 100% happy with the scans, but there are definitely some really nice aspects to shooting film again. B&W film was all I ever shot back in the day, and it's nice to capture that feeling that only B&W film can. I was already out burning up a few more rolls this weekend, and hopefully the scans of those should be better. There's a lot I like about shooting film again, but I don't think it will replace digital...it's a nice compliment depending on what you're trying to do with the shot, and it's killer for B&W. Any feedback is appreciated!

| | | Hey, nice shots. I like the last one quite a lot, although I wish I could see just a bit more of the track in the background. #2 and #4 are also very nice. Nothing like bw film to make an overcast sky look good. Not sure if this is a calibration thing or something else, but none of these have blacks as dark as the borders, at least on my screen. Did you scan these in rgb? A few of them seem to have a wierd little cyan/magenta thing going on.
yep. |

| | | Posted by robdobi nice stuff, #6 creates a really nice silhouette.

Thanks, that one was really dense so I almost didn't post it so I'm glad you liked that one.

Yea, if I could have gotten up a little higher the last one would have been a much better shot. The blacks are not as dark as the border because that's how I did the curves. Basically you drop a sampler in the darkest dark, in the lightest light, and then adjust the curve to make them almost 0 and 255 in all channels, but not quite. So that's intentional. Are you on an LCD? On my sony CRT they looked very close to black but on my laptop LCD they look WAY off. The CRT is more accurate. The color shift is also intentional, though I may redo it when I get these rescanned. For some reason when I warm stuff I tend to shift it more to red than brown. I don't know why I do that, but I do. Most of these are split toned with the shadows warmed and the highlights cooled, but i switched it up for a couple that are just cooled or have less warming. I think it gives them a bit more life. These I toned with curves, which I'm not very good at, so I'm still working on getting the exact results I want out of it. Thanks for the feedback! I used to carry a stepladder in my car at all times for that reason...now I drive a VW, and the draining gear took up the space it would have occupied. Not that anyone cares. The shot's still good, but it'd need to be big to work as is. Which is fine, cause bigger is better.

Ah, see, I try to actually push the darkest dark to absolute black, and put a seriously steep little section in between 0 and about 15 or so (sometimes this curve is an adjustment layer set to 'lighten'), then push the highlights to 252~254. I like me my shadows (with contrast), particularly in print.
make them almost 0 and 255 in all channels |
Are these rgb scans then? From a neg scanner, or flatbed? Just curious, they look pretty clean for b/w scans. The only way I get decent scans from Nikon neg scanners is to scan them in colour then discard two channels.
Are you on an LCD? On my sony CRT |
Nope, bigass Sony here. Prepress b/w and cmyk conversion is part of my job, lcd is the devil. (Incidentally, the total black shadow doesn't apply for printing in publications, only on photo paper).
The color shift is also intentional, though I may redo it when I get these rescanned. |
To each their own, I guess, but I've always considered tints (and hdr where adjustment layers will do) sort of a crutch for people who want to make mediocre photos look like art - these photos are good enough to be actual black and white, and (IMO, of course) don't need colouring, it just sort of takes away from what are otherwise great photos.
yep. |

Haha, yea I'm not carrying a ladder through those weeds.

Yea, I probably could have gone slightly darker with them. This is the first roll of film I've ever digitally processed, so I'm still working on it. I went with the recommendations from Ron Bigelow's site, which is good because you don't lose any shadow detail. Depending on the picture you could probably push it to 0, though.

No clue..I had them done. They are in RGB though. I used an adjustment layer to desaturate them because converting to greyscape changed the picture. Interesting about the Nikon scanners, though...I was thinking about getting one of those if I keep liking film.

Thanks, though I disagree with the idea that toning is a crutch. Toning with actual photo paper is a pretty time honored tradition and can increase the lifespan of your prints. At least where I learned, toning is just another part of the process. I think it can give some pictures more life. Admittedly, it's not for every picture and also admittedly, I need to develop some more solid toning curves to work with. To each his own...

| | | 8 and 10 are beautiful. By the way, if you can find a lab that scans with Digital ICE, you can get some nice dust-free scans.

Thanks...I'll have to see what Hunts is using. Got my color negs back today and they were somewhat better. I'll have to get them to rescan the B&W's at some point.

| | | BTW - Thanks Mortimer. When I posted these to my site I let some of the blacks go to 0 and I like them better that way...a little more tonal and moody. I ditched some of the toning as well, but not on all of them. I think you were right about some of these.
