| | | Red brick farm: Peterborough < on 8/26/2006 5:53 PM >
| | | Last weekend i tripped up to Peterborough for a look around and to try my luck on a house found by Cowboypenner. That house turned out to be the most interesting portion of the trip but i did take a few other pics. Here is a slideshow of my trip other than the red brick farmhouse http://ca.pg.photo...r=/a485re2&.src=ph If the pics dont tickle your fancy try synching up the B side to "Dark side of the moon" with the slideshow. I swear there are unknown forces at work here. The Red brick farm is a very large house. With awkward passages leading to parts of the house inaccessible by normal means. The layout is quite interesting but i have seen similar in older houses i have been in. Cowboypenner found this house but has been very busy with projects and is very generous with his time volunteering and so he hasn't had time to enter the house in the DB So this house is under my name but is very much his find Here is the database entry for the red brick farm location. Full member only http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=25236
Above is a shot i didn't have room for in the location database

Well put fedge. I agree. I hope the owners return and restore the place. That would be really nice to live there.

| | | Ok Folks, I know all about this one. This farm belonged to a man who passed away about 4 years ago. He never married, and inherited the place from his parents. basically, he grew up here, and continued to live here throughout his adult life and then died of old age. They ran the place for years as a horse riding stable, where you could go learn to ride, or take your girlfriend there for a horseback ride. My parents went there when they were dating in the late 60's. The reason I know all of this, is that a good friend of my dad's was related to the owner, and was the executor of the guy's will after he passed away. When he died, they held a large auction to sell off all of the equipment, furniture, and the actual property. It was in the summer of 2002 (I think), with no less than 400 people including myself attending at some point. I probably walked 1 kilometer up number seven after parking my car on the side of the highway. It was a great country auction at which I made a purchase. I picked up an old hoosier cabinet that had sat up in the attic (which otonabee shows us) since the mid 60's. Before that, the mother probably made her bread on it etc, etc. I am assuming the parents probably died in the 60's as well. The hoosier I bought was built in the 1920's, so I am thinking it had been in the house since new. In the hoosier, tucked away was his old public school report cards from the early 50's, some old horse equipment catalogues, and an old Dennis the Menice comic book from the early 60's. I love this thing. Back to the farm: The day of the auction, the farm went to.... I was not there for the bidding, but from what I understand it was bid up substancialy for approximately $250,000 by another property owner in the area. Much more than the actual value. So, whoever won the auction is now sitting on it, waiting for the marked value to reach what he paid for it. Another note for any explorers, back in the field, kind of north east of the house and stable, there is a clump of trees. In that clump you should find a bunch of old cars stuck in amongst the trees that grew around them. Thanks for the entry Otanabee, and the suggestion Cowboypenner [last edit 8/29/2006 1:03 AM by gworb - edited 4 times]

Close up of the stain glassed window
This door opens to a tiny space where you have to take a quick left and step down into another room
a kitchen on the second floor that had old newspapers from the sixties laying on its counter
old newspaper. Think it is too late to dial for the results
farm equipment in the smaller barn

This door is actually on the second floor. You hang a quick left and it takes you into another bedroom. Very strange set up

| | | Sad to see... I've witnessed that happen with a bunch of farms around here, too. A family has owned it for 100 years, and they finally shut it down. When I moved to Hastings 12 years ago, I was surrounded by farms. I'm about 10 miles from the nearest one that's still actually used for farming now.
