KIEV88? So so so sweet. So you are eccentric too.
Awesome choice of cameras.. . . . but I guess that is for another discussion board.
The pictures are wonderfully well composed sir, but you already know that.
Interesting selective focus.
Some (#2 and #7) seem washed out - but that is probably because it is scanned. Did your film version of those shots come out that bright?
Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, 2 and 7 were a bit weird. I only have a flatbed scanner, so I guess that may be part of it. No. 2 really lacked contrast for some reason; I think it was the film because I've noticed in some situations portra really lacks in contrast. No. 7 was really tricky. There was a LOT of broken glass on the floor and I had my tripod to its lowest (its a promaster systempro mini, so its pretty short) but I couldnt get low enough, and it was pretty dark so I couldnt get exactly the right focus. I have no idea why its sort of washed out. The meter in my prism doesnt work, and I dont have a handheld one, so I have to use my OTHER kiev to meter it. I think the meter in it got confused because everything was yellow. I was foolish for not stopping down. Also, it could be the contrast thing...
Thanks though.
Oh, I made a mistake on the lens; its a volina, not an arsat. I have an arsat on my 35mm!

6x6 format is freakin' awesome!!!!!! Especially for portraiture (even though you only have that one image of a person) You appear to be getting some color casts during scanning. Maybe shoot E-6 film. You'll get better pictures. Other than that, I like the images you've got up here and double high-five for medium format!

haha.

BUT... 800iso comes in handy when you're shooting shitty bands with shitty lighting.

I agree with dev. Lose the ISO 800 and take advantage of what medium format is best for: namely big-ass prints with next to no grain. Also get rid of the Kiev. Those things are annoying in that the pictures taken with them seem to be half Holga and half Hasselblad. Either go toy camera or go pro.

As for these shots, I like four and five the best, though five could probably do with a little less on top.

I guess UE photography critiques means UE gear critiques.

You know, Ive been constantly getting shamed for my choice, but I shoot pretty good shots on a budget.
However, I am upgrading to a Bronica in the near future...

Yeah, and I don't see what's so wrong with that. If someone posted a picture here with a lot of flare, I'd suggest they use a lens hood. Or if someone posted a picture with a lot of barrel distortion, then I'd suggest they upgrade to a better wide angle lens. Similarily, if someone said they "love medium format" and posted soft looking photos with poor contrast then I'd tell them that they should probably consider something else other than a Kiev.

All points granted, but thats sort of an ignorant viewpoint. There are a lot of other factors other than the camera. Scanning, film choice, post processing work.
Indeed Kievs are shitty, I know that. I chose to buy one to "get my feet wet". Turns out I like it. I mean, why would you buy the best race car if you were getting into auto racing? What if you didnt like it? Thats sort of my rationale.

Sure, if I were getting into auto racing, I might not run right out and buy a Formula-1 right off the bat.

That said, I also wouldn't get started with a Yugo.

And be fair - people were critical of your scanning and your film choice as well (as well as your very basic camera work).

And they're pretty much right, by the way.

i mean seriously!

especially, when, instead of buying a yugo, you could have bought an aging-but-still-quality CIVIC...

like, perhaps, a YASHICA TLR?

do your research, son!

If I may make a suggestion.. I started off with a Lubitel-1 (as optically stellar as a coke bottle) and then made the upgrade to a Bronica S2A a little while later for about $300CDN. It is an excellent camera with a top notch Nikkor lens.

I'm not much of a fan of Nikkor's 35mm lenses, but I would believe their MF stuff is decent to great. My Nikkor 65/4 for LF is quickly becoming my favorite lens of all time. So beautiful!

Ditto. Great shots too!

I love my Mamiya RB67 but I'm finding it somewhat impractical when it comes to UE. It's not the easiest thing to lug around! So I'm often restricted to 35mm Nikons when UEing.

In a location like this? Gimme a break, reversal film would suck out here.

I agree that these are not the optimal use of 6X6, but Provia ain't gonna solve anything - try a low-contrast, low-saturation neg film, like Fuji Pro160S or the slightly worse (imho) Kodak 160NC.

I like Kodak's 160VC. NC's colors are a little blah, but they can usually be fixed a bit in post. If you want to use reversal, go with Astia. Astia's nice and low-contrast as reversal films go.
