1850 Farm House -- Columbus, OH

There's a house right near the entrance to the neighborhood I just moved to (Westerville, OH...near Columbus). It's a huge, brick farmhouse that's been left completely wide open, and is full of great stuff--including photographs, books, letters, etc. It was built in 1850. I've been working with the local historian on researching the history of the place and the area...and am trying to contact the lady who owns it to see what she can tell me about it. I took a lot of pictures of the outside, but they're on my home computer, which is sick at the moment, so I'll add those later. (pictures below are clickable)

This is the house. I didn't take this picture and, for reasons mentioned above, it's the only exterior pic I have of the place. This one is from the county auditor's website, which lists this place as a ruin.

This is the back of the house. Not much to look at from this view, but oh well.

This is the wide-open back door. It looks like it's been open for a long time because there are vines growing in through it. The red flowers on the left are fake: the house is full of craft supplies and someone must have stuck some of the fake flowers in the tree stump.

Mmmm...refrigerator. No hacked up bodies or anything like that inside. The insides of the fridges are probably the cleanest parts of the house.

Foyer. I love the irony of the vacuum cleaner!

Dining room.

Kitchen. Doesn't it seem like someone was in here looking for something? Money, maybe? Jewels? Gold? Buried treasure? Who knows. They should have checked the door frames...that's where the money is always hidden.

Living room. This house is about as organized as mine. The creepy thing is that in one corner of this room there's a chair, a doll's head, a burlap sack, and a pile of UPCs.

The stairs in this place are actually pretty sturdy--it's the ceiling over the them that you have to worry about. Oh, and spider webs. Lots of yummy spider webs.

Looks like someone got pissed this tv isn't HD-compatible.

Bedroom.

Linen closet.

This is the only thing I took from the house, and have since returned it. It's a picture of the family that owned it last (and still owns it). Photo taken in 1959. I'd done a lot of research on the house, and it was pretty incredible to be able to put faces to the names.

Nice find. Try to buy the place, could prolly make your money back selling pictures of all the old yeseter-year stuff there.

And a general note on Ohio and Columbus in paticular... with all the joblessness and excessive taxation going on in that area... gonna be alot more stuff becoming abandoned... I guess in some way, government corruption and its desire to tax the people to death (literally) does benfiet the explorer in this way. I moved out of Columbus last year (April) and was glad to be going.

Just dropping in to say that this location is awsome! And great photos.

I'd be intensely interested in hearing it's history if possible. Also.

And that family photo is a scream. It's one of those "Caption This" sorts of picture.

Cheers

Wow, interesting. The house doesn't look to be in that bade of shape on the outside. Inside it could use a lot of work though. So many relics from the past in there. It saddens me someone would break a great TV like that, I bet you could get top-dollar for it if it wasn't broken like that. Thanks for the pictures and thoughts!

Is there a reason why that guy has his mouth wide open in the last pic?

I always worry about that, too, when looking in a fridge in an old farm house.

There's a similar one south of Columbus off Jacksonville Pike. It doesn't have any cool shit piled up in it but there is a pretty cool mural painted on one of the upstairs bedroom walls... assuming you'r willing to brave the rotting floor. I'll have to post some pictures of it some time.

Speaking of which, what does one need to do to become a full member around here? I'd love to chronicle some of abandoned columbus and this seems like the perfect place to do it.
