| | | Yeah. That's the ol' Colman School. A friend and I went by there and took boatloads of pictures earlier this year. Apparently, it's supposed to become some new african american museum or something. I keep hearing talk of it, then it never happens. There is (or was) a banner on the west side of the building for a while that advertised the whole "museum" thing. Last time I drove by, however, the banner was in tatters and the place looked as dead as ever. A decade or so ago, a bunch of squatters took over the place and much civil unrest ensued. Consequently, after everybody got booted out, the school district put security cameras all over the building. While reviewing our high-res pictures, I got the distinct feeling that the cameras were fake (no wires, super simple-looking), but you never know. It is a really cool-looking place, no doubt about it! (edit) By popular request, I'll dig around tonight and see about posting some of our pictures. -MoleNet94 [last edit 8/13/2006 2:47 PM by MoleNet94 - edited 1 times]

| | | (sorry for the double-post) Okee dokey, I've posted sized-down versions of some of the pictures. Sorry for not taking the time to make a cool photo gallery 'n' stuff http://silicon-arcana.com/molenet/colman BTW, it would appear as though the "museum" thing really is underway, so I expect this site may no longer be considered abandoned. Here is a news story (video) broadcast on KING 5 TV just two months ago. Sadly, it doesn't show the *inside* of the building, but does show folks working around and entering the building: http://www.king5.c...Id=68732&catId=231 May be worth another trip down there to see what they've done so far. My photos above were taken in mid February, better than three full months before the above story aired. Regards, MoleNet94 [last edit 8/14/2006 3:54 PM by MoleNet94 - edited 1 times]

| | | I have scouted this building as well. I received much assistance from others who are better at research than I and discovered Built in 1909 Colman School was the first school that many African American children attended in Seattle (I don’t know what that means) The first school with African American teachers Closed in 1985 that year a group of activists broke into the vacant building and demanded it be turned into a museum and stayed for eight years In a classroom on the first floor, a blackboard still holds the "Things to do" list written in chalk years ago by the activists taking turns occupying the building Tahir-Garrett, one of the original squatters tried to return in 1999 and was charged with property damage and criminal trespass A security guard posted by the Seattle School District noticed a door ajar and called police. I can attest that several days back in march ~noon I observed persons unlocking and entering the building using the main gate (south side) and the front door I have also seen vandalism to the plywood then seen it repaired within the week. If you go, please don’t break anything

| | | PS. Hey moleman, long time. Did you and your friend have opportunity to observe the interior of the building?

Different "mole" man Not me. And no, we didn't go inside. Didn't climb the fence. Only thing we did was examine a large metal grate on the ground which led to a chamber with the water main to the building. I had hopes it would be a tunnel into the building, and it looked promising at first, but turned out not to be so. Oh well. -MoleNet94

| | | I've been doing some research on this place recently. The construction company working on it is moving in all sorts of equipment - I imagine that the renovation is going to take some time, but you should probably go *soon* if you're wanting to check the place out.
