Site in MD -- just down from "Hell House"

Just a note for explorers near the old St. Mary's site in Maryland -- while the main building up the hill has been demolished, the abandoned paper recycling plant just down the hill is opening up.

The security is unobservant and friendly (to young women with cameras, at least) if you hunt them down and ask for permission to walk around. Sometimes the doors are left open. And there's some absolutely amazing stuff inside -- the several stories of rusting paper rollers inspired me to buy a better camera as soon as I had the money.

*

and. um. hi. I'm new to uer and any sort of urbex online community, though I've been at the hobby for a few years now. I used to go up to St. Mary's pretty frequently and after it got torn down, I started hunting online for ideas of other exploration sites that might be within reasonable travelling distance for me. And, well, now I'm here

Welcome to UER.

Nice touch with security; the easy way to deal with them!

If the paper recycling plant made paper from scrape be wary of chemicals that might be there. Caustics in particular. Avoid contact with vats that contain unknowns, residues(especially white or light colored), and all liquids and powders. Bring at least a pint of water in case of accidental contact.

We love pics. Posting some of the insides of abandonments will help you establish yourself here.

Enjoy.

Would it be possible for you to bring guests into the paper plant, I saw it when I went to Hellhouse and was really interested.

Good to know about security, I've also been planning to check out the paper plant. Supposedly there was an explosion a few years ago, and that's why it's mostly shut down. Last I was there, the bottom portion of the plant still seemed to be active and there were a few trucks parked around the place. I guess I need to go back

I was just walking down the road thats right next to it not to long ago with a friend. And we walked up next to it and security stopped us and started yelling at us saying how it wouldnt be their fault if we got hurt there, and WHEN we did, not even an IF, then after we got out of the hospital we would go to jail for trespassing. He wasnt very nice. Then one time me and my friends jump off that little bridge/ overpass thing into the water alot because its something to do, and the same guy pulled up and wrote down my friends tag number, not for jumping but he said parking under the train bridge is illegal now? Has this happened to anyone else? But if you go up that little road next to the paper plant to those houses, theres still alot left inside. Pretty much your usual everyone just up and leaving sort of thing.

Or if you go over to historic Ellicott City (its like, a 5 minute drive from "creepy College" there is the Patapsco Female Institute or something. They give tours or something? Its fenced in. Its ruins that they preserved. Me and one of my friends went up there late one night, like 11, and we walked up to it and saw someone standing in the doorway of the place, scared the hell out of both of us. But he walked down and started talking to us and we asked if we could come in and look around and he was real nice and let us in and like, explained alot of stuff to us. All owners and security should be like that Of corse. Two 17 year old girls cant be all that threatning either.

I'm pretty sure there's a couple guys that work there and some are nicer than others. I've gotten shoo'd away before, but this one was pretty nice to some random girl with a camera.

Parking under the train bridge has always been illegal, but parking on the shoulder of the road just next to it is fine in daylight because the CSX tracks and the paper mill land are surrounded by state park land and it's public road. I tend to park right in front of the "parking only on shoulder" signs and make the hike from there.

There's definately some nasty stuff in there, though, being rather careful not to touch things, I'm more concerned about the mildew from the piles of paper pulp that still haven't quite dried out from putting out the fire and from every rainstorm since.

Well, the icon's one of the interior shots I got fro the paper mill. What's the etiquette on pictures when there's not already a publicly available UEDB entry for a place? just put them in the forum?

Trust me mildew is nothing compared to caustics, and acids. Sodium/potassium hydroxide may appear as clear or a murky liquid, a powder, caked, or as a residue. It dissolves flesh, and will cause severe burns, and blindness if not treated promptly. It feels slippery like soap when wet and doesn't rinse away that easy.

Loose your footing, accidently knock something over, a leaking pipe dripping you didn't notice in the shadows....be prepared for the worst. Safety glasses are a good idea. Wear boots, long pants, always bring water, and two flashlights if dark.

Post the pics here in this thread, or start a new thread in the photo section.

My general daytime gear is BDUs with button or zipper pockets, steel-toed boots, motorcycle gloves, bandanna, glasses, LED flashlight, large bottle of water, extra camera batteries, emergency inhaler (why'd I pick a hobby like this if everything makes me sick?), cell phone for backup because I'd rather be charged with trespassing after the fact if I or people I'm with need medical attention. First aid kit, duct tape, more water, and a hundred feet of rope stay in my car and have all been helpful in the past. The one thing I really need to go out and get is a pack of asbestos-grade filter masks, given the mildew and asbestos and godknowswhat.

I really doubt she will be licking anything in the factory, and is probably smart enough like most people here to be careful in places like this. She has been to this place and seen it inside and out, and will do what she needs to protect her self I am sure.

This isn't boot camp and you are not a ninja. But you sure look like an idiot in that outfit.

I've worked with caustics, and acids. I've been in textile and paper factories. Sometimes the danger is not obvious, and these caustics are more damaging to tissue than most acids. The hazards I've seen has startled me at times. If your alone and get that in an eye you will be incapacitated by pain and blindness.

Not that I would don't go there, but I would wear glasses, or safety glasses.A clean-up rag is a very good idea too.

That was my nice way of saying you are being a nag, and not doing her any favors. She is a big girl and can take care of her self and is smart enough to not get chemicals in her eyes here just like she doesn't get chemicals in her eyes in any other place in any other place. Learn when to not step in with one of your little lectures.

This isn't boot camp and you are not a ninja. But you sure look like an idiot in that outfit.
