Hi all!

Finally my waiting time seems to be over and I can introduce myself after lurking around for a week...

So here I am, been doing UE before I knew what it was, so from my early teenage years. I'm 21 now.

I live in Hungary, somewhat near to Budapest, and I feel Hungary altogether is pretty unexplored. There's loads to see - many factories and old soviet army bases in the country...

Since I don't know of other UErs active in my surroundings, I decided to get a few friends to make trips with.

I have a section for UE on my little webpage thing, you can see where I've been recently (heh, that 1 place...) and those I plan to visit in the near future. Check it out! http://umlaut.intro.hu/~kelsey/ You might also want to check out some of my photos on flickr - http://flickr.com/photos/wiredance.

Also, I've seen a few people travelling to Budapest from this forum - next time you come, tell me and we can have some fun in the city

cheers,

kelsey

HI my names kevin, I'm from the south suburbs of chicago. I am itchin to go on my first UE but i can't find the perfect place. Most of the areas ive scouted have looked too advanced (one of them looks like it might have some sort of security system) or are in the worst areas (next to freeways, in the middle of hardcore ghettos.) but im always up to taggin along on an expedition.

Hello chaps. I'm still pretty new to the whole UE thing, I went on my first trip a short two months ago, and I'm itching for more. I'm in the Pittsburgh area so if anyone knows of anything interesting (that's not too bloody obvious), let me know. I also wouldn't mind to join someone else's crew if there is one in the area.

Yo everybody!

I may be new to this forum but.......

You might say that I'm a sidewalk explorer. I would usually tell it like it is to the building owners, demolition contractors and they would let me look/walk through the building and take pictures. The best time to "preview" the building is when it's open to inspection prior to a liquidation auction. I like old industrial architecture & engineering and maybe that's why I'm here. Though there aren't as many places to explore in Toronto as there used to be. Colgate at Vanderhoof (old Bristol-Myers Javex Plant), Colgate in downtown, huge Lever Brothers Plant 1 on Eastern Ave, Canada Wire on Laird, the massive Canada Packers Plant on St. Clair, the huge Glass works on Warden, CIL Paints on Castlefield, Glidden Paints on Wallace Ave. are all gone!! Algoods on Sterling, Hexion in Leaside and Reckitt-Benckiser on Evans & Wickman Ave. just closed and it's a matter of time before they're gone too! If anyone has old pics of these places that they explored prior to demolition please post them!!

Chill baby...chill

Yo

by the way... has anybody explored the Lever Brothers Plant #2 at Lakeshore and the Don Valley Parkway? I'm itching to find out. It's being run by a contract manufacturer - was sold by Levers some time ago in 2002 or 2003 I think. The gates from the rail yard next to it seems to be wide open every time I bike by there. Just becareful, I think they have cameras around the main building. Also the main boiler plant (not the new annex) is dormant and it's huge. Looks like they replaced them with package units in a new annex in the mid 1990's.

Well, I never know how to begin these...hmmm...

I started exploring about three or four years ago out of a historic curiosity I guess you'd say. I live in Waltham so I got the Met basically in my backyard, I had never been up there and I was always curious to see what it was. I asked my father if he'd take me up there to look around one time before it was gone, he'd basically grown up on the grounds in a matter of speaking, so he was happy to oblige. Well the 'one time' turned into two...and three...and so on. At the time I didn't even know I was exploring until I met my friend's friend which I think really got me into finding more and more places.

Of course I got into this a few years too late to see the great asylums around Mass, but there's really nothing I can do about that.

Other than the Met, I haven't been around too, too much. There's the armory I like to go to every now and again, a few bridges around Waltham, a factory near-gone in Watertown, a drain in Watertown, Gaebler, a small edison building out in Walpole. I think that's as far as my exploring has taken me. I just gotta get off my lazy ass more haha.

I suppose this is about it, aye?

I'm new. Never done anything like this yet, but I'm fascinated (maybe unhealthily so) by the whole UE idea. What to say about me...?

I'm 42, male, married with kids. I live in Rhode Island. I'd like to explore abandoned buildings, lost tunnels, forgotten infrastructure, whatever. Look forward to hearing from you.

Just wanted to drop a few lines and introduce myself. My name is Tyler. I am 24 years old...just moved to Oakland, CA from Memphis, TN a couple of days ago. I've been exploring for years but just realized that other people have been too...I'm very happy to find UER and look forward to meeting many of you. I don't know hardly anything about the California UE scene so any help/introduction/pointers would be much appreciated. I should be back in Memphis every month or so for a weekend as well as at X-mas break and summer break and would love to do some more UE'ing there as well. Cheers!

I wonder if people still read this section after the 20th or 30th post? Anyway besides being in one of the most amazing boy bands in the world im also interested in abandoned buildings and tunnels. I spent a lot of time going through an abandoned casino a few years ago (now torn down) and loved it. I've checked out a few other buildings (theres a great abandoned hospital in San Francisco but they have guards now) and after seeing this site I decided that it would be fun to get back into it. I know a ton of cool tunnels some miles long I'd love to show the site and the difficulty of becoming a full member is interesting...

so hi everyone I hope to be around and contribute as much as possible

Don't let the Full member stuff intimidate you or bother you. It is mainly here to ensure that people are honest about their hobby and arn't reporters, spammer, cops, etc. (though they could all be explorers I am sure). Just give it time and participate honestly and Full Membership will come your way.

Welcome, nice to meet ya, go explorer, take lots of pictures and post them in the Photography section. We love pictures!!

Hey. I'm a pretty new member. I've been lurking around for a while and I was at the tour of Battery Townsley given by /-/ooligan. (For people that were there at 11. I was Matt.)

Anyway. Howdy. Haven't really done much (read: any) exploring, but I hope to soon rectify that.

Greetings fellow explores! I'm from Independence, MO, but I travel all over the immediate area trying to find new adventures. I'm glad I found this site; it's nice to be around people who enjoy exploring as much as I do! My wife and all my family and friends think I'm insane for exploring; I guess you either "get it", or you don't and I'm glad to find such a large group who do! Long live UE!

I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older; then it dawned on me - they're cramming for their final exam...

I had my first Urban Exploring experience at about 10 years old. Their was an old abandoned building at the edge of one of the city parks of my town. My brother, his friend, and I all decided that we would love to find out what was inside. Donning our hammers (we had no crowbars) and jackets, we set out on our little expedition. I was a little nervous, because, even though the building was somewhat out of the way, police frequented the roads nearby. I knew that what we were doing was illegal, and I really wasn't in the mood to be ticketed or arrested. When we got to the building, we walked around to the back. The building was positioned on the side of a hill, so the back was slightly shielded from view. We found an old crusted and rusted padlock on the door. We each took turns pounding on it until it finally cracked off.

We opened the door and entered to find a dark stone room. We went a ways inside and I stepped on a board. I felt a nail slide through the bottom of my shoe and go right between my toes. My eyes widened and I showed my companions my very slight miss. I noticed some stains on the floor and some fungus growing on the walls. We didn't go that far into the building because the ceiling above us was collapsed in one of the areas. It had been about an hour and a half since we had set out and we were all getting hungry. So, we left the building and went home to eat and tell our parents about our little adventure. They told us that the old building was the office and store-room to a small zoo that the town built when it was first settled. The town had a bustling mining industry and a few of the wealthy founders put money together to build a zoo.

I went back to the area a few years later to find the whole building a pile of rubble. Vegetation and small trees were grown up all around it. I was a little disappointed because when I first explored it, I didn't really have an appreciation for such things.

My second experience was in an old abandoned clothing factory which my grandfather had managed. It was really sort of magical inside. The history was so thick and powerful inside that you could almost cut it with a knife. I remember being very interested in the huge mechanical clothing presses that lined an area of the main floor. With all the dust and darkness I could almost see and hear the shuffling feet and shouting and whisperings that had taken place half a century before. There was an area where the old forklifts (or whatever vehicles they used) traveled to and fro from the loading dock. It was maybe 50 or 60 yards long and I had fun racing my brother from one end to the other.

Unfortunately, this exploration was ill-prepared for we didn't have any equipment with us, including flashlights. The end of the huge hall we were racing on emptied into a huge pitch black room. Without light, my brother and I were too scared to proceed. We went back to the main floor and looked around some office and planning areas. We found old order forms filled out but never sent, clothing plans, corporate reports, and various other documents strewn all about the desks and floor. It amazing to me. It was like a CROATOAN message left by the people that had preceded me. I could close my eyes and envision all the life that had once filled this factory. That day is a beautiful memory of my past, my brother, and my childhood that I, to this day, smile to think of.

Sometimes when I am sitting alone, I imagine what certainly places will look like in 15 or 20 years. Right now I look around my house and think that 20 years from now, when some kids or explorers are looking through my house, I wonder what they'll see and what they will think. They will only guess about the origins of the small wholes from the screws holding up the paintings and pictures, the small indention on the wall from and old wooden rocking chair. They'll see the carpet and railings torn from the wall. They'll see a big line of screws from a light rack on the ceiling. Or will they?

That is what inspires me to explore. Be that Urban or Natural. I love the stories, the sights, sounds, smells, feel of all the places that I find. And even more, I love the memory that I carry for years afterwards. All of the urban explorations I have done were in Illinois. I moved to Colorado a few months ago and I've been looking for possible exploration areas. I've already explored a hospital (slightly) and I've explored tons of mountain sides (rock-climbing) and a few beautiful caves and rock piles.

Also, there is a town about 45 minutes away from my house that is completely abandoned. It was an old mining town in the mountains in which the mining companies actually mined underneath the houses. They had to permanently evacuate the town because of the risks that they birthed.

I'm planning on exploring this town one of these days. Of course, I'm going to way (over)plan this trip because I know there are many life-threatening aspects involved. If anyone lives in the Vail, Colorado area and is interested in going with me, please feel free to send me a message.

I apologize for being so long-winded, but I'm extremely passionate about this hobby and about histories and mysteries. I hope some of you enjoyed reading this post.
