Bear Mountain

I went for a ramble (apparently 10 km) up Bear Mountain the other day and saw a few things.

Various people have tapped the mountain as their water source apparently. Some clean streams and lakes up there, so no surprise.

I don't know who was driving that car on some crappy roads (or when), but my guess is they were coming down too fast and lost it on a curve. If they survived it's only because the tree stopped them from continuing on down the cliff. Nice colour.

And finally a number of companies have tried to find gold on the mountain, and the latest left pile of core samples (amongst other things) behind.

Nice work, great photos... You don't mean our little, newly named, Bear Mountain/wannabee Whistler here near Victoria do you? Mind giving a few hints where the 'real' Bear Mountain is? I seem to recall a recent post with that name...

Years ago I took a bunch of photos of Britannia Beach Mine, there were many core sample trays like you show. These are impressive, and I believe represent a lot of work. It's very interesting, but weird and disturbing to see them scattered, and treated with no historical respect.

The car, hmmm, nice shade of blue indeed. However, it may not have been a 'The Man Who Wasn't There' type incident. Not too long ago people just dumped old cars in the woods. Or pitched them over a bank and claimed insurance money. Fun to stumble across these old behemoths. I found one recently, a corpse, but amusing with it's immaculate 'State Farm Insurance' decal on the bumper.

I like your Manning Park post, and meant to comment sooner. Those vertical logs, tacky, delightfully tacky, in that oh so cool 50's way... If asked, I'd guess the old station was a Texaco.

Cheers,

A.

No, this Bear Mountain is on the mainland up beside Harrison Hot Springs. And although it seemed quite tall when I was walking up it, I don't think it's going to supplant Whistler any time soon.

As far as accessing the place yourself, although it's marked on maps the access road is kind of a pain to find. If you're wanting a challenging (long and steep, but mostly on forestry roads) hike with a satisfying conclusion, I recommend it. And the man-made things throughout provide something to look at outside of nature.

Core samples -- the ones in the picture are maybe half of what was there (not counting the ones littering the ground).

Interesting indeed, thanks. Your online name... Is it inspired by the film of the same title? A real classic, starring Burt Lancaster, Videomatica will have it.

Heh, no it's a tongue in cheek thing, I think given to me in rugby.

And while I have not seen the movie, I am semi-familiar with it given any online search engine's response for an image entitled local hero.
