I was thinking a handy tool for having while exploring would be a rope ladder. Great for when the only entry or exit is over several feet. Does anyone know where one can be bought? Also, what kind of flashlight does one recommend?

For the rope ladder, any outdoor activity store.

For the flashlight, anything that you are comfortable with. Not too heavy, but bright enough for your needs.

I use both a petzl LED headlamp and a 2-AA Mag-Lite

Since you seem to have an apparent inability to use the search function or post in the appropriate forum section, I've gone ahead and moved this into UE Tutorials. Try taking a look at the pinned thread in that section for threads on these topics, or try using the search button over on the sidebar.

Search is your friend.

I don't know about rope ladders. Personally, I view them as just another way to break my ass, and I try to avoid that as much as possible.

Flashlights I do know, that is, I know what works for me:

I carry 2 lights, sometimes 3.

1- a 3D Maglite - spend the extra money and get a Mag. Sturdy, reliable, adjustable beam, extra bulb, and good battery life. Plus, it doubles as an attitude adjuster if you every find yourself in a situ. were attitudes may have to be adjusted. (Accosted by aggressive junkies / vagrants and the like) Lots of power, and works well for light painting.

2 - a smaller LED light. Mine runs FOREVER on 3 AAA batteries. The LED packs a lot of punch for a small light. Mine's a Noma. It floats, it's waterproof, and the batteries last forever. It's small enough to stick in my back pocket, or in my mouth if I need a hand free.

My third light is a 2 Mil. CP handheld spotlight. It runs on a 12 volt DC lead acid battery. It stays in the trunk of my car most of the time. I only use it in larger spaces when the Mag just won't cut it. It'll light up anything, and I can charge it with my cigarette lighter.

ROFL!

OK man, before you get ripped by the hounds:

A rope ladder is simple enough to make. PVC pipe and strong rope. Dont' make this more difficult than it is. I wouldn't begin to know where to buy one.

............And the never ending flashlight thread.

I'm not even interested enough to search for this one. Everybody has an opinion, and everybody is convinced that they are right. Mag-Lite makes a fine flashlight. Surefire makes a fine light. Streamlight makes a fine light. I use a G-Tech, and I think its a fine light. Handheld or headlamp? There is a whole thread about that as well. LED or halogen? Another whole thread unto itself. On this particular subject, you generally get what you pay for. You buy a $1.00 light at the dollar store, you spend a lot of time stumbling around in the dark with a broken light.

My opinion? Buy Petzl 3 or 5 LED headlamp and be done with it. However, if you use the little "SEARCH" button to the left of this screen, you can find a wealth of good information on this subject.

And let the beatings commence!

PS And please for the love of all that is holy, dont' get into Orbz.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Wow, I am very surprised at the lack of flaming in this thread. I think the others who've posted here have pretty much covered the flashlight thing. As for the rope ladder, just make one. Heres one way to tie an all rope ladder:

Or you could make something like this:

Or you could just make one with PVC or wooden bars or whatever. Hope that helped.

The Streamlight 3C-XP offers the combination of a super bright Xenon lamp with the superior run-time of LED's. Choose between the Xenon lamp and LED's via a dual switch control.... each function has its own push button on/off switch. The 3 LED's will give you over 300 hours of run-time( on one set of batteries) The battery will support a minimum of 1 hour of LED light after the incandescent (main Xenon bulb) runs out. The LEDs make the light ideal for directing traffic (with optional wand), navigating a cockpit, or to light a path. The Xenon lamp give you power for longer range lighting needs, with a 5-6 hr runtime on one set of batteries, As my back-up

I carry the following at ALL times.

Features of Streamlight 2L Twin-Task Flashlight:
- powered by two 3V lithium batteries, included
- 4.8V xenon bulb with adjustable focus
- 3 bright white, 100,000 hr life "Nichia" LEDs
- 72 lumens, xenon (2.5 hrs run time)
- 10 lumens, 3 LEDs (up to 28 hrs run time)
- 5.43" long
- weighs 5.4 ounces with batteries
- anodized machined aluminum body

Screw the rope ladder. Get etriers. Eb*y/any climbing store. Easier than an all-rope ladder, stronger, all around generally more useful. And cheaper to buy than a rope ladder.

As for the flashlight: One big enough to beat people with, or one small enough to fit in a pocket. No point in the midsizes.

/me whispers: search......
