Pressman's Home, Tennessee

A few weeks ago I was visiting family in Surgoinsville, Tennessee, I got into a discussion about UE with my uncle while walking along the runway of the small county airport behind his house. He had recently moved to the area after retiring from a career in law enforcement, and had never heard of the term "Urban Exploring". I told him about the various places I had explored and he got pretty interested. It was then that he offered to take me up in his airplane and fly over the Pressman's Home complex, which had many large abandoned buildings, I didn't hesitate to accept the offer. The complex was about a 10 minute flight from the airport, if that. It was truly amazing to see the various buildings and surrounding terrain from the air. I didn't have time to get my camera before the flight but I decided that I would drive to it the next day to get some pics. I didn't have enough time to explore the interior, but I got quite a few exterior shots of various structures on the grounds. When I got home the next week I did some research and found some information and pictures of the complex when it was in operation. The building descriptions and original photos can be found on this website: http://users.plane...ome/Buildings.html

The following paragraph describing Pressman's Home was copied from: http://webpages.ch...enshome/index.html
"Pressmen's Home Tennessee is located between Knoxville and Kingsport. It was the headquarters for the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants Union of North America. It was established in 1911 by George L. Berry. The union provided a Trade School to train union members in all aspects of printing. The Trade School housed both letter-press and offset presses as early as 1912, it also provided training in Pre-Press and Bindery. Many young men came to Pressmen's Home from all over the United States and Canada to train in their profession."

Here are a few of the pictures I took during my day trip, It's pretty cool to compare them to the pictures taken when it was in operation:

The Technical Trade School:

The Administration Building:

The Sulfur Springs (foreground) and Memorial Chapel (background):

Overgrown stairs leading to where Hotel Pressuaina once stood; all that remains is the screened in smoking area:

Another building in the complex, I'm not sure what it was used for:

This location was very appealing to me, because of the many buildings, and because of the historical importance. It is eight hours from my hometown so a trip in the near future is out of the question for me, however, next time I am visiting family in the area I plan to do an extensive exploration.

Has anyone been to this location or heard of it? If you live in East Tennessee this seems like it would be an awesome place to explore.

It's located about an hour from Kingsport, I'll send directions in a PM. If I didn't live so far away I would definitely be game for exploring. Next time I visit my family in Tennessee I am going to make a trip.

Did some research and someone stated that they drove up there recently and didnt even make it to the main driveway before a hummer can up and a guy pulled a shotgun out and told them to leave. They said there were directTV dishes on top of the trade school.

another person said they heard generators running in the trade school when they went a little while ago. someone else said the current owner (at that time) was using the trade school to store some cars.

someone can try, but it looks like its not gonna be a place youd wanna go.

Where did you hear of this Hummer & shotgun story? I discovered this place recently and was researching it online when I found this forum. I got a weird feeling from the entire area- no traffic, no one outside their homes. The golf course that looks as if it hasn't been used in 10 years but there are many websites giving greens fees and other info, etc. There are numerous signs nearby marked "Private Drive" and even barbed wire in some places but no signs of human life or vehicles. I didn't see any sat. dishes on the trade school, but I didn't know to look for them. It's sad that such a huge bustling place has crumbled to nothing.

My husband and I were looking at property here today. No shotguns, no hummers! Most of the buildings are in pretty bad shape. We stopped at a house and asked a local some questions. Nice guy. Our realtor told us the golf course has recently been purchased by someone in CA and there are plans to reopen. It's beautiful country. This is a great website if you'd like more info http://webpages.ch...menshome/home.html

can anyone send me more information and directions, please? this is in my area and I am *very* interested -- I'm a graphic design major and have three years of offset printing from a local technical center, so, this is near and dear to my heart!
I would really like to get a look at the trade school building, if possible...
