Subway Exploring

Does anyone have useful advice concerning traveling and exploring subway tunnels? How do I not get killed down there, and are there ways or places to wait for trains to pass before moving on?

Cheers.

Avoid the third rail, watch, listen. There usually are places you can duck into.

Trains can appear at any moment, don't count on the scheduled time with your life. There are also maintenance vehicles that use the tracks.

If your in the states especially NYNY, 911, and they aren't taking kindly the visitors in their tunnels.

In large cities many times there are abandoned tunnels that are relatively safe to explore.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

My advice would be to try and go with someone who already has some experience with this sort of thing.

Does anyone know someone who has gone through a NYC subway crawl recently?

Infiltrating active subway systems is an advanced, high risk, area up there with exploring abandoned mines in terms of risk. One wrong move and you're dead. Don't even think about subway tunnels until you're completely completely familiar with tunnel infrastructure and train operating practices. You have to know how to read the signals, how non-clearance areas are marked, where the 3rd rails are, and where the safe areas and exits are on the section of tunnel you intend to visit. Knowing about alarms and typical security practices will also come in handy if you don't want to get caught. Once you know all this, then and only then, find someone who's done tunnels before and ask to go on a trip.

Well what if fate smiles, and he makes it out alright? Good news! Homeland Security still makes house calls. Exploring any kind of active tunnels in NYC is asking for it.
