....My mother says to me today. I went to the Dussault Foundry on my birth day and it is listed as a Superfund site. She says she doesnt know what she is sending me into (She drops me off to these locations due in part I dont have a license/weels). "You dont know what your health is going to be like when you get to my age"--"Hell Im surprised I even made to my age"--Going on 47, tobacco/alcohol.

What I was curious about was what health risks would one face in the "long run" when being exposed to hazards like that "un-protected". I dont have a mask yet and I dont really touch alot of stuff, I just pass on through it.

I mean Im not really at "high levels of risk" am I for going to places like this?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

I honestly wouldn't go anywhere near superfund sites without a biohazard suit. As for long run risks, It depends on what the superfund sight is contaminated with. You could get cancer, you could get breathing problems, ect. I believe this superfund sight has asbestos. Which the risk is still unknown. But I would wear a mask next time you go back. There may be all sorts of unknown goodies in the air and soil. But thats just me, see what other people say.

Since it's a foundry there will probably lots of asbestos; any dust is suspect. The danger is relative to the airborne concentration. Many people are exposed in places they think are "safe". Believe me in more towns then you think it blows down the streets, much less the 20 years ago, but some is always present. You don't want to eat it intentionally though; don't go on windy days, don't stir up dust, and leave if there is no way to avoid doing this. All clothes are taken off before you go home, wash thoroughly, and don't shake them about before there washed! If you get a respirator get a good pro model, and make sure it seals tight. Four hours of wearing one in 90 degree heat will show you why I don't unless working where I need it. The biggest risk factor with previous exposure and developing disease is smoking. Don't smoke.

Chemicals are normally not an issue if there are none still stored there. It's in the ground. If it's a superfund site they will normally level all buildings. I've been at SFS where they comb through the dirt in white suits, and put the contaminants in white buckets. Well it's sort of silly because the wind, rain, and such spreads some of the toxic waste beyond the site. Some such as chromium at this site would harm you only if you ate the dirt, literally! They are trying to lower the levels. So just walking through normally doesn't matter. It's a good idea to look up what is there so you know what to avoid.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

CC, most places in this area are contaminated with something or another. So far everywhere you've been here except for the farmhouse, is,was, used to, prolly still does have contam's in/on/around it. now that remediation has started at bethlehem it is prolly the worst spot around that you can get into. But by all means stay away from the spots in lewiston. they have recorded background radiation readings up there of 300 to 1000 times the norm. Personally i dont worry that much, i have been exposed to more contaminants than most..i remember taking jugs of TCE(trichloroethylene)and rags and washing machines down by ha ha ha hand and it hasnt go go go got to me ye ye ye yet. lol. seriously tho- stay out of the puddles and try not to kick up too much dust.

Whoops!

Oh totally, that was the most polluted place I have ever steped foot into.

stay out of the puddles and try not to kick up too much dust.

Yeah I dont try to kick up that much dust, if I happen to though I walk fast naturally so I get out of it quickly. As for the puddles, I dont go swimming them lol, I wear boots when I go to these places and I dont splash around in them.

I cant say Im all to concerned about health, I do "un-healthy" things....

It surely would not hurt to get yourself a mask. When you get home you should always make sure that you trash or thourghly wash what you have worn because you are not sure what you were tromping through.

I am really not sure what to tell you about the risks long term of the things that you might get into. Asbestos, lead, pesticides and such were not feared when I was a kid and I got into alot of that stuff. So far I have not been alerted to problems from all the crap I got into. Lucky or just not sick yet, who knows. Hell we even played with the mercury from broken thermometers.

If you really want to explore just educate yourself as much as you can about the site and do as much as you can to protect yourself. Better safe than sorry. If you take care of yourself and very important do not start smoking. Most every hobby has it's risks just be smart about it.

A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind.

Normally even stored chemicals are no big deal such as solvents, spilled TCE, so what? Your not living there, but some chemicals demand respect.

All acids, and especially caustics can be very dangerous. It is not uncommon to find large vats of sodium hydroxide (lye) at paper mills, dried it is a white caked mass or power, in solution clear. Eats flesh like crazy. Spilled hydrofluoric acid; just leave the room, carefully! Those cute little pink pony bottles of fluorine are holly terrors. Leave. A good working knowledge of chemistry is desirable if chemicals are present. Never trust labels, or assume any substance is what it appears to be. Assume the worse, and don't touch.

Wear safety glasses, or eye glasses, always. Eye injury is the biggest hazard other then falling. It's easy to poke a wire straight into your eye in the shadows. Always bring lots of water; at least a quart, even for short visites. necessary for first aid, and life. Keep your hands away from your eyes. A wet rag with water/windex in a plastic bag is nice to keep your hands clean. It's a bad practice to smoke at a site.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

That's going to do wonders for your endocrine system. Seriously, just don't eat the dirt and you should be fine.

here you go, from the Home Depot:

$20.00 = Organic Vapor, Paint & Pesticide Respirator

  • will NOT filter out asbestos and other harmful elements

    $35.00 = AOSafety Professional Multi-purpose Respirator

  • Protects against paint and pesticide sprays, vapors, chlorine, muriatic acid, lead, asbestos, mold abatement, lacquer and enamel.

my advice: dont save money. buy the protection.

Actually, in farmhouses, breathing in animal fecal matter can be a bit of a concern. Hantavirus is one problem which springs to mind, not the most pressing health concern, but a concern nonetheless.

It's not just farmhouses. Fecal matter, or indeed biological remains of any kind, can harbor all sorts of disease or bacteria.

Sometimes we just need alittle common sense. If you're questioning being there enough to ask about health risks, it's probably not a good idea, right?

There have been posts about industrial waste, toxins, contaminants, pretty much everything you could come into contact with in any place, but the bottom line, if you're not prepared, and protected, try not to enter.

Hantavirus is much worse than most bacteria in both mortality, and contagiousness. This is a little nightmare that makes Lyme disease look like fun.
Mouse urine, saliva, and droppings can transmit it. Direct contact is not necessary! Show zero tolerance to all rodents in dwellings that you own. Exercise caution in closed spaces that are infested; barns, farmhouses, etc.

Great advice by everyone who replied. I'd also check out your specific superfund site in detail online to determine the contaminants. Once you find this, you may want to research Hazardous Materials terminology to make sense of it all. Check out the MSDS sheets for any of the chemicals/hazards. It will tell you the PPE required. Disclaimer: Don't FUCK with HAZ-MAT!
