How do you go in ?

I wanted to get some feedback on how you guys go in when doing some UE. When I go exploring I will usually go with one other person and usually her or I will go ahead of the other and "scout" the area while the other waits a bit. Mind you we are never out of vision or earshot range. I think this works well to check for dangers and also if there is anything good. What do you guys (and gals) do when out at a site...if anything at all?

two in, one out spotting from a distance, 2way radio contact at all times.
i'm a huge fan of the 2way radios, getting earpieces for ours. I always bring cargo pants (dark green) and if I encounter anyone I throw it in the most obscure pocket in the pants.
check doors first, then windows, look at the ground around the area, last resort roof. I've never had to go to the roof, I'd rather pull out a window...

Leave only footprints, take only pictures... unless its like really cool.

Hey there I usually go on a scouting trip before hand of the site.
And find out and make all plans for next time.
As well as see if it's a cool spot so I don't waste my time coming back with all my equipment .

Yeah I usually do a couple drive bys over a couple week span. I call it casing the place but I just try to get the lay of the land and to see if someone is living there.

The only thing I don't like about two way radios is everybody has one so your on a party line. Anybody can listen in on you conversations even the cops. For comms I prefer to use cell phones with earpieces. Its usually just me and one other person but if you had three or more people you could make a conference call and everyone can have clear, private, two way communications. Communicating with a spotter is an excellent idea however.

Scout the location thoroughly to determine the entrances that are 1) most safe, 2) least visible, and/or 3) least conspicuous. Sometimes, you may have to compromise one for another. A tunnel might be invisible, inconspicuous, and convenient, but hazardously unsafe, while the blatantly visible front door is the safest entrance. Could also be vice versa. Asses your options, and choose what is best.

While checking entrances, determine the best time of day/week to enter. For live sites, or buildings in proximity to live sites, this is equally important. You probably don't want to be under the eyes of suspicious people upon entering a site if you can't blend in. On the other hand, blending in might be your only option if, say, your entrance is only available during active hours. It all depends upon the site.

Sometimes your exit strategy isn't the same as that for entering. Have a few in mind before entering, and choose the best option when the time comes. Depending on how long you explore on a site, factors in the surrounding environment can change. Exits can get blocked by who knows what, and you must be prepared for those scenarios.

Lastly, before attempting to enter, know what action to take or what words you will say if you are to be approached near the site or caught within the site. Again, this can vary depending upon where you're at, who the person is, etc.

Well most of the stuff I do is abandoned houses and I tend to only initially scout by car then go out there one day and see it first hand. We just do our scouting inside to make sure floors are safe for the group or there isnt a rabid wolverine lurking about.

honestly most places do not need super scouting. otherwise i'd say scout and find an entrance before you go and have a clear objective before going in. otherwise just go in and pretend you belong there. having someone wait behind looks shady, like you're there to strip copper or something like that

I hate all of you

I like to scout out a location first to make sure there's a good way in. If its easily accessible and Im dressed well enough for it, then I just go for it. Most cases I come back to it. none of my friends are so into it so my BF and I always go together. Just cameras and a flash light in hand. And walk around s'about it.

Scout the location, see if people watch the place. If it's all good one can always find and easy opening.

usually, i use a door.

sometimes a window works, too.

this leads us to the next big question: over the fence? VS under the fence?

I just walk right up to it. No scouting. And I always go alone.

always under. over takes too much time for a fat man. plus if you "fix" the lower supports on the fence its easy and concealable access

I'm a big fan of scouting, though, occasionally (like in the case of college campuses ) doors that are unlocked on one day will be locked the next. I've taken advantage of the "opportune moment" when I just had a cell phone for light.

For larger, more complex sites, I'm a big fan of using steam tunnels to gain access. Otherwise I just use the first reasonable looking entrance I find.

I will scout out a location but be ready to actually go inside in case I find an entry point and the situation is perfect (or damn close to it)

It's usually just me and a buddy. Once we find the location we'll scout it out from a distance before hand, than enter it. We don't use 2-ways, but we have our cell phones. We stick close together, LOL. Just because sometimes it's pitch black in boarded up houses. If it's a barn than we'll spread out. It's also nice to discover things at the same time.

As far as getting in, usually there's an open door somewhere or window. Hoever, at this one residence, we kicked the door in. I still feel kinda bad =\. But it was the ONLY way to gain access.

Seriously, you'll get 100 different answers to the same question, and fact is, it depends on alot of factors. There are places that need a detailed plan for where people stand and how they approach, and there are more "casual" locations where it simply doesn't matter.

Not every site is patrolled by security/cops, and even those that are may not require going commando just to avoid detection. People in general are pretty lazy, especially when they fall into a routine. Learn that routine, and you develop a special insight.
