Alarms?

Ever been exploring and manage to set off some kind of alarm? I have. At the factory by the river, there's a room with a still-functional alarm. Based on a sign posted outside, I believe it's a safety alarm signalling that the fire system in the building is not receiving electrical power. Not knowing the cause of the alarm, I aborted with hasty abandon, but now that I'm pretty confident the cause and purpose of the alarm, I'm going back to investigate that room once my new camera and flashlight arrive.

Anyone have experience with alarm systems and the like? Any tips and tricks for identifying their purpose and/or meaning? Of course, fire systems are (usually) obvious, but some are less so, and entering a pitch black room from a brightly window-lit area it's not easy even with a flashlight to even see an active alarm buzzer, leave alone identify it. I'd hate to have to bail on an outing again just because some benign electrical failure alarm sounds.

-EDIT- While I'm at it let's be specific. A single electrical horn blasted my ears shortly after entering a room that was pitch-black, which was unusual for the building I was in with its expansive windows. I never got a visual on the room, but there was some large machinery that resembled pumps mounted on the floor, and a large gray electrical panel with all sorts of instruments on it, decorated with black&red&white danger stickers, you know the type, warning of "480 VOLTS". (I really doubt it was still powered, but I had no intentions of finding out.) Outside in the second big room, there was a sign posted that said something to the effect of "If fire horn or fire light are operating, this means the fire pump is not receiving electrical power. Call a mill electrician immediately, day or night." (the "mill electrician" bit stood out in my mind... was there a time when "mill" and "factory" were used interchangeably?)

ha! i know what building your talking about, i know the owners of that building and im friends of theirs

edit

you were in the power house those large things were the generators, the reason for the horn is they have had A LOT of issues with vandals and gangs in that area, they are kinnda mad about people getting in there, i wouldnt dought that that alarm is hooked up to something else that notifies the owners, that and the buildings are for sale (i think they are)

just a tip, that is some of the most toxic land in the fox river valley area

Well then are you going to give him to security code for the alarm? He's been a member for a whole day now. Ha!

Man... wow... okay, I think there is a lesson to be learned here, but I'm not sure if I got it.

I don't really care about getting any codes or anything, I just found it kinda odd that there'd be a functioning alarm system in a building that appeared to have the power cut. Well, at least know I know I made the right decision when I bailed, as petty as trespassing penalties are in Wisconsin I'd rather not go through the hassle of getting caught.

I don't think I'll ever go back. I'm not really worried about the toxic factor, I just don't want to gamble with my heart problems and deafening alarm horns.

Anyway, now that that's over with, anyone have any similar or stranger experiences to tell?

yeah, i've got a story along these lines.
about 5 years ago, a friend and i were running around one of our favorite places to explore (we'd been there five or six times at least).

anyway, this trip was our clean up picture run (getting shots we hadn't before for the writeup in my sig)

i'd taken about two pictures when my friend said "i think i hear a siren" we stopped, and, sure enough, we could barely hear a siren coming from one of the lower floors in the plant. being the intrepid youth that we were, we decided to retreat back to the car to get his scanner.

here's the part where the forehead hits the keyboard:

we got the scanner, and, upon hearing nothing on it, WENT BACK (yeah, i know)
we were in there for about five minutes, we'd gotten to the alarm panel (which read"compactor door", where we came in from), when my friend said "We need to go, NOW". I said "Why?" and he replied "I just heard M4 technologies on the radio".
so we ran out, hopped into my car (the only time i've ever been glad i parked on site). and drove out. we didn't see anything, so i circled the block. right as i was coming up on the place, three cop cars pulled out from the building next to it and drove into it's parking area. we started to freak, but i realized that the cops couldn't pull us over for driving by it, since they hadn't seen us anywhere near it. I continued down the block, and was just heading home when we heard "yeah, this is it" on the radio.

that night, my friend and I were the two luckiest SOBs in the world. I haven't been back since, that place is tightened way the hell up now, which is too bad.
