Fox Cities, WI area

Thought this would be a good way to introduce myself.

I've been interested in UE for a few months now, and found a few sites in my area that I've been interested in, and even have done a couple expeditions with my girlfriend who I'll just refer to as MissN.

Here's a few places I'm really interested in:

M-I Drilling Fluids factory, 1130 E John St., Appleton WI -- I've dubbed it "Great Horn" for the still-functional pump failure alarm that will make you crap yourself when you first bring a flashlight into that room. A relatively small abandoned factory that's directly underneath the College Avenue Bridge. I've made two outings to this site, first with my sis and then with MissN, and the second time we got in. There's pictures mixed in at http://roothorick.ath.cx/camera/palm/1/ (numbers 060306_001 through 060306_043), however most of the pics from that explore were destroyed in a stupid screwup on my part. And yes, I need a better camera.

Valley Fair Mall, (address unknown), Appleton WI -- Officially the first totally enclosed mall ever to be built in the US, it's now slated for partial demolition within 2 years. The cinema in the back is still functional, but the rest of the mall is very much so abandoned. I haven't yet successfully gotten into most of the mall, but I sure have tried. http://roothorick.ath.cx/camera/palm/0/ numbers 052306_001 through 052306_048.

The mystery floor of the City Center Plaza parking lot, (address unknown), Appleton WI -- City Center Plaza is a mall-turned-office-complex with a pretty typical-looking parking lot... until you enter the stairwells on the first floor. Then you notice a makeshift fence and gate blocking off what appears to be a basement floor to the parking lot, inaccessible to vehicles. What's down there? Nobody knows. I'm going to have to crack locks to find out, and I don't know if I'm willing to take that step yet.

Well, that's my finds. Anything I'm missing?

Offhand, I can only think of the abandoned pulp mill near Little Rapids and the glove factory in downtown Green Bay; also Hotel Hell in Maribel (not really Fox Valley).

Hello there. I am from Oshkosh and am starting to delve into UE as well. Know of Valley Fair Mall, it seems that it would be possible to explore, but I have never heard of that pump bldg. Sounds awesome! I know it is not too exciting, but the old abandoned railroad bridge by the old Riverside Paper is the only thing in Appleton I was in. The abandoned control room atop the bridge is pretty slick. I only wish I had gotten into this more seriously a few years back. We have had so many abandoned bldgs torn down the past 7 years it is unreal. I was in many of these with friends, but stupid us never took picture. We did videotape inside the old Universal Foundry and Radford Door Company before they were torn down, but the tape was recorded over by one of us... Ugghhh. The old Mercy Hospital in Oshkosh was a great UE. We do have the video tape of that. It closed down in 2000 when they built the new hospital outside of town. For 4 years it sat abandoned, but in 2005 they began to convert the southern end of the building to apartments. This is now complete, but the southern tower of the building only comprises about a fourth of the entire complex. The rest is still abandoned, and it does not look like it would be too hard to get into. This venture was really neat because I got to see the two old birthing suites, where I was born. LOL. Anyway, I do have a few other spots in the Oshkosh area that i would be willing to discuss if anyone was interested. Also interested in seeing if anyone has any other places they would be interested in planning a trip to.

Alright everybody, drop your tacos or I'll blow your brains out

You're from Menasha? Unless you didn't want to mention it here on UER because threads are indexed by Google, yeah, you're missing something. Check my web site.

Whoa. That Gilbert Paper plant looks awesome. Having lived my childhood and most of my life in Appleton and currently residing squarely on the Appleton<->Menasha border, I tend to pay more attention to Appleton than Menasha. I actually discovered the M-I plant by recalling a childhood memory of stumbling upon it while exploring around Telulah park with my dad.

that old railroad bridge isnt abandoned, it no longer turns but if they really want to reopen the locks like they are talking about they will have to make that and all the other bridges work again.. stupid development

Forgot to mention it before, and then nohbdy posted, so new post for sake of continuity.

Based on my first impressions, getting into Valley Fair Mall will take some creativity and risk. Part of the building is still in use, which generally keeps the gangs away (who typically break in destructively and leave the gaping hole open for others), and they've been pretty anal about locking it down.

-EDIT- Yay for punctuation.

I'm right now researching lock bumping, and taking note of the exact locks they have at VFM. Lock bumping seems like the perfect thing because it can compromise 90% of the locks out there without damaging the lock or even leaving evidence of the breakin (of course, beyond what you do otherwise while there). I'm just having a hard time matching locks by physical appearance, as locks for commercial sites aren't typically pictured or described online...

If you decide to research bumping on your own, keep in mind it's legally identical to lockpicking and is most definitely illegal above and beyond trespassing. Even possessing or making bump keys is a crime. Just a heads-up.

Bumping is probably your best bet for UE. I'm an avid lockpicker and I would be willing to help you finding the bum keys. Take a picture of the keyway and I'll help you out. I'm taking a guess right now and I'll say it's and SC1/SC4 keyway. Since when was posessing bump keys a crime? Yes, one could consider a bum key a bulgulary tool, but it's a key! The police, at least in Fond du Lac, don't recognize bump keys, and you could say that a bump key is your house key. Plus, bumping can be done with almost any tool that provides impact. Heck, I've bumped locks with a spoon!

Anyways, I've got a UE site of my own. http://agentddr999.../urbanexplorations

whoa, wait up all

you dont need to do that, go in during the day, the doors ARE unlocked most of the time, ive been in there many a time during the day and i have gotten both upstairs and in to a basement areas by finding open doors, and when the doors are locked they are alarmed (i know this), if you can get into one part you can get in to most of the others

play it safe

or go in for a movie and jump the fence

Well, why didn't you say so?

Yesterday, I managed to bike to Oshkosh (over 30 miles there and back), but I didn't have time to explore since it was already dark when I rode into town. I did, however, find a few abandoned buildings on the way (all of Fond du Lac Ave): The Lagoon Supper Club, The Sailmaker, and a small abandoned bank next to the sailmaker.
The Lagoon Supper club was open, and it was a decent place to explore.
The Sailmaker, by the looks of it, was secured, although a few of the garage doors were ripped slightly. An aviation snips would probably take care of the garage door. The place had an office part, and what looked like a garage in the rear. It may be worth exploring.
The bank's rear window was weak, and I ripped part of the screen off to gain entry. I could only explore that single room because the door leading to the main part was locked from the other side. There were also some old magnetic contact sensors on the door leading to the outside. The front door to the bank advertised some alarm thing, but the windows were open. They had those little windows that open a little bit and make up a larger opening. I assume they could easily be bent in and torn off. Anyways, the place is like 20x20feet, and it probably isn't worth exploring. I just wanted to see what the tellers window looked like. There are probably much larger and interesting places in Oshkosh to explore.

There's not really that much here in Fond du Lac. The only place worth coming here for is the Villager, an abandoned hotel on 1325 S. Main Street. Maybe I'll ride down to Oshkosh one day and scout out some good buildings.

Are you coming to the sept. 19th photography club meeting in Oshkosh? Nobdyshome will be speaking, and I will be there.
Also, we should be getting a really sweet new location in FdL soon. The rolling meadows nursing home is closing down soon, and the building is huge. I should be able to get in a day or two after it closes, unless the building is sold right away. I read that it was closing within 120 days at the start of the summer. I don't know when it is actually closing.

No, unfortunately, I haven't been able to get out there. I should've this weekend, since it is a decent weekend before it will turn cold as all hell.

I got out to rolling meadows today! There was no sign of anybody in the parking lot at 4 o' clock. There was a sign posted on the back door that said where you could contact the directors and when they were working until. Some were working until "final closure", but there was no specific date. The latest date was 10/11. There were a few hallway lights on, but most of the rooms were cleared out for the most part. I think it's officially abandoned. A trip this weekend may be in order.
