I use "bens 100% DEET". works pretty well, just do not use it directly on your skin!

I've had good luck with Deep Woods OFF. Just be careful spraying it around silicone rubber (ie camelback hoses and cell phone cases). The stuff will turn it into a sticky mess.

Yeah I have heard that. I will try and get the 100% Deet stuff and see if I get protected a bit more. Those things are just freaky.

take a water gun fill it with gasoline, put a torch on the front, and burn all the ticks and everything around you and you should be just fine.

Suck it up. I've gotten Lyme's Disease from a tick and that didn't set me back any... even if I am going to be tired for the rest of my life.

If diagnosed in the early stages, the disease can be cured with antibiotics. If left untreated, complications involving joints, the heart, and the nervous system can occur.

There are two very good products that you can find online at military surplus stores. I will see if I can get the names/numbers for you.

The first is a topical solution that is applied much like sun screen.

The second is a spray on chemical for your clothing NOT TO BE APPLIED TO YOUR SKIN.

This stuff keeps most everything off you, but make sure you read the directions in full. It keeps the ticks off most of the soldiers who end up in the woods all the time if applied correctly and in combination.

Here is a link to the DOD Insect Repellant information

http://usachppm.apgea.army.mil/DODIRS/

Look for Permethrin Insect Repellent Clothing Treatment. Sawyers makes the commercial stuff I believe, but check around. Thats basicly what the military uses on clothing. Yes it washes out. No it wont kill kids, but it is semi dangerous if you lather your body in it.

The other skin applied chemical is DEET, probably 03% but not sure exactly. The creams tend to not sweat off your body like sprays.

"Ruin my life" is not really how I'd put it, but it's not much of an exaggeration. It's hands down the most trying part of my life because there is not a time when I am not tired, and when I say tired I really mean exhausted. My joints always hurt which bothers me when I play bass and it drove me to quit skateboarding, but besides that it's not the end of the world. It's a hassle, but I was close to death in the hospital for a month in kindergarten (because of one little deer tick I had found on the back of my neck after 3-4 days), so it could definitely be worse.

Deep woods off is what I use to keep ticks away. If you do get one on you a cigar or cigarette is a good way to burn them off. Wear long sleeves even in the summer. A BDU jacket is a good choice, and wearing several light layers also help keep insects away from your skin.

If you ever fall off the Sears Tower, just go real limp, because maybe you'll look like a dummy and people will try to catch you because, hey, free dummy

One of the best ways I've found to deal with ticks is to wear khaki pants when out in the woods. Ticks show up better on lighter clothing, so you can spot them before they can get inside your clothes and bite you. I walk through thick grass & forests for work every day, and between the bug repellant and the khaki pants, I've only had one tick bite me this year. I've caught a LOT, though, that I spotted crawling on my pants.

Seed ticks are a different story. I hate those fuckers. I once got into a nest of them so bad that they had to be shaved off of me with a razor blade.

Lyme's is great fun, 2 months of antibiotics just seal the deal. That's when you spot it right away. I tried the vaccine, and that messed me up too for a bit. Now I don't care, I have immunity to a least one strain, and probably partial to all.

No matter what you use, always check from head to toe after deep sixing the clothes. You have a least 12 hours to find the buggers before they will infect you. It's the ones that are so small you almost never see them; you feel them, sometimes. Deer ticks. They carry more deadly diseases too, ones that do kill.
Good times.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Cover as much as your body as you can (keeping practical dress in mind) with clothing, stuff like tucking your pants into your shoes helps a lot. Bug spray, as long as you use the kinds mentioned, is a good thing. Check yourself after you get back from a tick infested area. Remember that ticks will most likely (but not always) be on the warmest spots of your body: groin, butt, neck, scalp, and armpits. Just as an extra precaution, shower after your check. You should be good after that.

Deet wont stop ticks. If you can get some boots of any kind. Wear two pair of socks knee high help. Tuck in your pants if you can or get BDUs (plain color is probably best) and tie the strings. Make sure to treat your socks and boots as well.

Like everyone said wear long sleeve everything.
