| | USS Yorktown charleston SC < on 6/29/2006 5:52 AM >
| | | when i was younger my boyscout troop went to the aircraft carrier the USS Yorktown. me and my friends explored it and we find some good spots. -in the cabin area (where we slept), sadly it's not accesible to the public, but you could pose as a boyscout, or leader and get through, and go to the fire exit, no alarm will sound, and you find yourself in the anchor room (in my opinion the best part of the ship). also there is a big grill, if you go behind the grill there are old arcade machines in a room. -there is some way to get to a catwalk that goes right above the hangar below the flight deck and then into a really cool hallway, sadly i don't remember how to get there. -if you go to the engine rooms you will see a catwalk leading to a sign that says "no admittance' or something, if you go past that, down a ladder, you'll find where everyone drops the pennies...i wouldn't reccomend taking the money though, it was a tradition of my troop to pee down the shaft... -also there were a few places on the destroyer nearby

| | | A few of the guys in my unit have traipsed around the yorktown as children or taking there children. I'll see if I can get some photos from them.

| | | I've found the best way to get on the ship is after hours... You will have to drive down Patriot's Point Blvd. to the Hilton Hotel..park in the gravel parking lot and go down the dock to the ship. As far as I know, there is not anything obstructing you from going to the ship from that side... In addition, there is no security on the ship other than a public safety guy who is usually sleeping. However, keep in mind that although the ship is decomissioned, it is state property... but security there is really slack. It's a great ship and a really cool place to UE!
