long time listener, first time caller here.
Am travelling to Japan in September, and looking for as much info. on exploring opportunities. i have read all the places on this site, and am very excited with the opportunities, the obvious being G-can and gunkanjima. If anyone knows of how to organise a trip to g-cans, please let me know, as i am extremely keen to check it out, and assume needs to be organise well in advance.
also, anyone offering free accommodation, in return for Vegemite and Australian beer, please hit me up!! or anyone willing to show me around certain abandoned islands, also hit me up!
any hints/tips/ideas/cheats etc etc, please make a post!

As a gaijin (foreigner) in Japan be aware that you essentially have no rights. The locals are suspicious of foreigners in the smaller areas. The cops can detain you for 21 days with no questions and no phone calls, then deport you. They don't even call your embassy. Apparently the embassy does a call around every week to check if anyone has been picked up. Having been deported once do you think they'll let you back in? I heard an italian urbexer attempted gunkan recently, got caught and was deported... they don't fuck around.
If you're a photographer you can try to play the explorer/photographer card but if your japanese is poor good luck. If you're caught stealing trinkets/damaging anything kiss your holiday goodbye!
So you have to ask whether or not it's worth it. Will being deported from one country affect your ability to enter others? Do you like Japan enough to consider living there or returning? I've no idea, just giving you food for thought and realistic perspective.
G-cans tours can be booked through the gcans website. It's ~2hrs out of tokyo by train/foot. The tours are free and awesoooooooooome.
