Fredericksburg Industrial downtown...

Here's my short version life story...I was born/raised in Maryland, and lived in the Fredericksburg area for 16 years, now I live in NY. One place that I always tried to explore was the industrial area in downtown, F'burg, on the Rappahanock river. I know a construction company owned it (local, can't remeber their name..had a blue logo). There was a flour mill that was tall and square, an old factory to the flour mills' left, and katty-korner was the powerplant owned by a man named Hugh...something. He wanted to raze it and build a club there. *Cringes* Yeah, I feel the same way. Anyways, police were around there like roaches..I could never get in any of them to take photos. Are they still there? And how about the Old Mill Park? Still graffed? Thanks for any info. and photos. Bfagan.

I poked around the power plant one afternoon.... there was hobo sign around the outside. The interior had apparently been one large room, full of machinery back in the day. Now it was one large room totally devoid of machinery. It was cavernous and had some pretty interesting looking pipes entering from the land side (and i'm not even a drainer), but I couldn't tell much else, mostly because I never managed to get inside. Well secured with bars that I might have barely been able to squeeze through back when i was in caving shape.

I remember eyeing the mill too, but there was decent police traffic on the road and it didn't seem worth the risk at the time.

Yes, they are all still there. There has been some talk in the past few years of razing all of it and turning Sofia Street into one of those "Main Street USA" fabricated-downtown type strips, with big-name stores and restaurants trying to pose as boutique shops and eateries. Horrible stuff...luckily it keeps getting shot down by the Fredericksburg City Counsel.

As for Old Mill Park, I haven't hung out there since I was in high school so I can't really say about the police presence [although they certainly weren't present back then...].

Unfortunatly, River Road has always had a ton of cops there for some reason. I would have always expected Rangers or Wardens, considering the parks and recs. there, and all the fishing when Sripers come to spawn there..but I dunno. *shrugs*. Maybe due to vandals? I was exploring the area near the old locks ( or where they once where ) once, when I ran into a hobo tent. No one was "home", but it took me by surprise. That was the same day I took a look into the flour mill. It is even cool from the outside, with the old school signs and such. I had my camera and maglite with me, and the only way I could look in was from the opening through the iron bars near the basement. It looked wicked cool, with original light bulbs still in place! Machines still intact, good structure to it, etc. What I saw was the ceiling, stairs that of course winded up, and the machines on the floor surrounded by two feet of really bad looking water. And it was pitch black, and really cold in there. I was dying to get in there and get up to the window at the very top...could never gain entry. Either too many cops, too many yuppies running around in SUVs to call the cops, and it was locked up tight.

I have heard that awful "stripmall-marketsquare" building idea since I left Va, four years ago...but when I talked to the historical society in downtown, they told me not to worry. They would NEVER let the industrial area be razed for new business. They were planning on getting those buildings on the historical registery and keep them up. So, I was happy with that info.! Give those developers the finger! lol. Tons of open land to build on, and they always want to wreck the cool places. What asses, I.M.O. Thanks for the info, all. Good to hear they are still around.

Went to Fredericksburg this weekend, hung out around the "old mill" district. I found a few interesting things, like the electric co, and a mill but things are boarded up pretty tight. There is some stuff downtown as well, mostly just drove around to see what I could find. Found a couple interesting things along the train tracks that were pretty easy to access, the rain was pretty bad so I only had a couple of hours, got some interesting pictures and about 27 mosquito bites for my efforts. I think F-burg is defenitly worth checking out if you're in the area.

I pass through this area every 4 or 5 days on my way from home to work or work to home.
